Physician Assistant

University Hospitals Medical Practices (formally UPCP/UHMSO) was established in 1994. UH Medical Practices is the largest primary and specialty care physician group in northeastern Ohio, with a physician complement of over 340 physicians, covering an eight county area from Conneaut to Sandusky to Medina. The medical practice group consists of allergy, cardiology, endocrinology, family medicine, gastroenterology, general surgery, geriatrics, pediatrics, internal medicine, neurology, obstetrics/gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, otolaryngology, pediatric ophthalmology, pediatrics, physical medicine/pain management, podiatry, pulmonary medicine, rheumatology and urgent care.

Position Summary/Essential Duties:
The Physician Assistant is responsible for assisting the supervising physician(s) within the supervising physician's normal course of practice to provide quality care for patients and to increase patient access and satisfaction. Standard tasks to be performed by a physician assistant under Direct Supervision, On-Site Supervision, or Off-Site Supervision if specified by the Ohio State Medical Board to include:

1. Assess patients
2. Obtain comprehensive patient histories and perform physical exams
3. Order and perform routine diagnostic procedures
4. Develop and implement treatment plans
5. Monitor the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions
6. Provide instruction to meet patient needs
7. Institute and change orders on patient charts as directed by the supervising physician

Special Requirements:
The requirements of this job are governed in part by the law of the State of Ohio and cannot be changed without consultation with the legal department. There are several conditions that must be met before a person can begin work as a PA as listed before. Consequently all positions are contingent upon compliance not only with standard UHC employment procedures, but also legal and credentialing requirements including a determination of lawsuits, if any, that have been brought against the PA. The form of standard or supplemental utilization plan that must be used for submission to the State Medical Board for prior approval by it accompanies this job description. No other form will be accepted without the prior written approval of the legal department

Experience Knowledge:
1-3 years experience as a Physician's Assistant. Demonstration of quality care in prior positions. Included in this requirement is an assessment of any claims or litigation against the PA.

Special Skills Equipment Knowledge:
Must have computer skills to access patient medical data from UHHS mainframe. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Outlook.

Education/Expertise:
Formal Physician Assistant training from an accredited program with NCCPA certification. Must be able to perform the tasks relative to the specific area in which the Physician Assistant will practice, as listed in the model Physician Assistant Utilization Plan that has been approved by the Ohio State Medical Board.

Required Credentials, Licensure or Certification (i.e. RN, RRT):
NCCPA-certified PA (PA-C) or eligible to be certified. Must meet all requirements of the Ohio State Medical Board for Physician Assistants. Approval by the Ohio State Medical Board of standard or supplemental physician assistant utilization plan and supervision agreement between supervising physician and physician assistant before beginning work as a PA. Must be credentialed by University Hospitals of Cleveland credentialing office before beginning work as a PA.

Must be certified to write prescriptions.

Preferred Qualifications:
Previous experience working in Emergency Medicine is strongly preferred.
