JOB DESCRIPTION/RESPONSIBILITIES:  My innovative, global company is developing a novel chemical process to extract a critical product from a unique raw material that will have a significant impact in their industry. They are at the stage to build a pilot plant, and I am recruiting qualified candidates to be considered for the Pilot Plant Director position. You will be responsible for the design, development, construction, start-up, and ongoing operations of a green-field RD chemical pilot plant that converts the biomass into this key product and associated co-products. This is an exciting opportunity for the following reasons:

 

1) Person will get to build and lead a green-field facility utilizing a brand new technology.

2) This person will manage all aspects of the process; from design, to build, to start-up and operations and personally select and grow their team throughout the different phases of the project.

3) If pilot plant is successful (5 year timeline) then this person will lead the commercial effort of this technology which will be a $1billion venture

4) Company is a multi-billion entity with strong financial resources and a commitment to see this technology through to success.

 

 

Your more specific responsibilities include:

 

Facility Design Construction: Develop bid package for green-field chemical pilot plant. Lead design-build contractor selection process. Lead internal review process: technical and financial. Manage design-build process in an on-site capacity to ensure startup on-schedule and on-budget. Report project status: technical and financial at agreed upon schedule.

Start-Up Operations: Coordinate raw-material supply plan. Manage and execute agreed-upon startup / ramp-up plan in a safe and efficient manner. Coordinate with company RD to match process/product output with performance requirements. Report project status: technical and financial at agreed upon schedule.

Ongoing Operations: Develop research plan to understand process limits in terms of throughput, output, stability, cost, efficiency and product-characteristics. Develop operating procedures and processes for all phases of operations. Develop and execute research plan with counterparts at company's research/materials group. Seek, evaluate and implement process improvements adding, eliminating or altering major process elements. Produce and deliver sample product to agreed-upon schedule.

Ongoing (all phases of operations): Assist in near-term and long-term strategic, technical and financial planning process. Control capital and operating expenditures within agreed-upon budget. Manage the HR process for the pilot plant including: recruiting, hiring, on-boarding, reporting, scheduling and reviewing. Manage other ongoing corporate processes related to procurement, Safety, IH, Legal etc. Identify and pursue all opportunities to develop a leadership position in intellectual property through patents, know-how or trade secrets. Ensure that the pilot plant complies with all government regulatory, corporate safety and IH requirements.

JOB REQUIREMENTS: Must have 12+ years of industrial experience. Must have experience with leading a new chemical plant start-up (pilot plant start-up preferred), not a duplicate technology/plant but a new technology for a company. Experience in managing a new technology project from facility design to start-up and operations; so all aspects of project management of a technology from inception to operation is required. Experience in using biomass as a raw material to convert to final biobased products such as biofuel is a strong plus. Experience in solvent extraction (acetone/hexane based), fractionation processes, and solvent recycle processes is important. Petrochemical experience is a plus. Experience working in a PSM regulated environment is required. People leadership of an engineering organization in a pilot plant or small chemical plant is required at minimum with additional operations leadership experience in that type of facility preferred.
