Essential Job Duties
- Responsible for the accuracy and controls around the plant physical inventory. The supply chain group will supply the manpower to take monthly inventories; however, the overall responsibility for the control environment around inventories is the responsibility of the plant controller.
- The controller is responsible for the safe keeping of the fixed assets of the company. They must enforce the control environment to ensure assets are tracked properly and take an annual inventory of fixed assets.
- The Plant Controller is responsible for the accuracy of the standard costs. This starts with the bill of materials and item costs, labor routings, labor rates, as well as overhead assignments.
- Reporting variances to set standards in a manner that supervisors and managers can understand and take corrective action. They are held accountable for the performance of the plant.
- They must understand process flows and have an above average understanding of process capabilities within their facilities.
- Study activity drivers within manufacturing and be able to allocate overhead costs in line with those ABC drivers.
- Continuously on the plant floor working with the supervisors to help them understand where they are missing standard costs.
- Participate in Kaizen events to improve productivity and prepare analysis to support new capital equipment with a complete understanding of IRR, payback, and NPV of investments.
- Prepare numerous plant specific accruals as required by GAAP.
- Reconcile all G/L accounts specific to the plant
Scope of Responsibility
Plan, direct, and control the financial activities of a small plant with less than 500 employees. The Plant Controller will report to the Division Controller directly with a dotted line relationship with the Plant Manager. Typically these facilities will have about $50 million in revenue and $45 million in expense control responsibility.
Supervisory Responsibility
Directly manages one to five employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Lance policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. More importantly, this position has equal power as the plant manager. The controller must influence the entire plant management team to work within the control environment. They technically have indirect reporting relationships for everyone at the plant.
Knowledge and Skill Requirements
CPA or CMA is desired; however, not required.
Education and Experience
This position requires a bachelor's degree and at least 7 years of direct experience in the field.
Physical Demands
The employee must occasionally lift up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk or hear, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk.
Work Environment
This position is a “Plant” position and NOT an office job. This person must be able to be on the floor and comfortable in that work environment.
