JOB PURPOSE: This position plays a lead role in the engineering design and execution of one or more projects. Coordinates work from outsource engineering contractor.

SCOPE: This position works with little supervision, receiving only very general guidance and direction. Works on moderately complex projects and performs project engineering work from proposal to implementation. Serves as a technical expert within the organization. Ensures compliance of engineering deliverables with Praxair standards and industry best practices.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: This position reports to an Associate Director of Engineering. No Direct reports however; may supervise work of less experienced Engineers and contractors assigned to projects.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for the management of civil, mechanical and electrical design and engineering resources to create fabrication and construction specifications and design packages for large projects. Projects range from Front End Engineering Design (FEED) and facility layout through detailed engineering of gas processing facilities.
Ensures design packages are in compliance with company standards as well as country-specific regulations (i.e. OSHA, PSM, API and RAGAGEP).
Participates in the preparation of specifications, bid documents, cost estimates, and completion of Front End Loading (FEL) documentation for new opportunities.
Has extensive breadth and depth of knowledge in a field of specialization and working knowledge of other fields.
Leads the resolution of issues such as conflicting design requirements, suitability of materials and similar.
Is innovative in developing, selecting and implementing engineering techniques and solutions to solve difficult problems. Anticipates problems and develops contingencies.
Outlines project requirements, assigns tasks, and supervises progress to ensure that objectives are being met.
May define critical project criteria to ensure project completion; ensures successful completion of assigned project phases within the budgeted time and cost constraints.
Influences team members and promotes ideas to improve design and implementation practices.
Makes technical decisions based on full awareness of viability, cost, and other benefits.
Facilitates team meetings and decisions; provides technical direction to project team members.
Encourages collaboration across functional skills.
Leads field teams through installations, issue identification, analysis and repairs across multiple skill areas.
Acts as lead engineer on complex projects.
May perform complex tasks and assignments often requiring development of new designs, processes or techniques.
May develop engineering criteria, reviews designs and documentation to ensure compliance with standards.
Interfaces with internal and external customers/suppliers.
Provides technical and engineering support to Praxair regions and/or plants.
Keeps current with state of the art tools, design practices

Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Engineering
Minimum 7 years of experience as project engineer, plant design engineer or project manager
Demonstrated experience with both FEED and detailed engineering
Experience managing multiple projects at one time
Strong interpersonal and communications skills
Ability to interface effectively with all levels within the company as well as organizations outside the company
Proven record in managing projects in the $50-$100+ million range
Experience in modularized packaging of process piping and equipment
Experience in a refinery or chemical process plant engineering as well as an understanding of codes and regulations pertaining to facility design and engineering is required. Knowledge in process plant operation, HAZOP participation and/or facilitation, and direct customer interface experience is required. Experience working with local municipalities on permit requirements and managing submittal requirements and specification of owner-supplied valves and specialty in-line components is required.
Experience with Bentley Autoplant and Microsoft Project preferred.
Experience performing engineering tasks such as pressure drop and line sizing, PSV sizing and flexibility analysis (AutoPipe or Caesar II) desirable.
Project Management certification (PMI/PMP) preferred.
