We are seeking a highly motivated individual to support large molecule (peptide, antibody, and protein), preclinical drug discovery efforts in the Department of Cardiovascular / Gastrointestinal Disorders for the treatment of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and obesity. The major responsibilities of this position will be 1) to apply expertise in diabetes and obesity to influence strategic and scientific direction of drug discovery teams across Medimmune's/AstraZeneca's biologics portfolio 2) contribute to assessment of external business alliances and in-licensing opportunities 3) to participate in the new target discovery teams to identify the next generation of therapies and 4) to instill scientific innovation through personal leadership.

Position:
The ideal candidate must have expert knowledge in Metabolic Disorders as evidenced by an outstanding record of publications in peer-reviewed journals with high-impact, proven track-record in leading preclinical drug discovery teams (preferably biologics) from conception of project to early clinical trials, excellent management skills, including the ability to set high but reachable goals, define priorities, manage individual performance, and infuse the team with a sense of purpose and urgency, strong ability to influence scientific thinking and direction of multifunctional drug discovery projects, build and managing collaborations within and outside the organization, must be well organized with outstanding interpersonal and oral/written communication skills, and be able to manage several projects.

Education:
BS (17-20 yr), MS (15-17 yr) or PhD (11-13 yr) in biology/biochemistry with a specialization in Metabolic Disorders.

* Expert scientific knowledge of T2D, obesity and/or bariatric surgery.

* Conducts, plans and leads one or more highly complex scientific projects, including determining objectives and organizing activities.

* An emerging leader as evidenced by internal consulting, mentoring and project team membership and active support. 

* Maintains high level of expertise through review of current scientific literature, submissions to scientific journals, and attendance and participation at conferences focused on the research and development efforts of the company.

* Decisions or recommendations consistently result in achievement of significant project objectives.

* Through collaboration with management, expands business opportunities for the company and development opportunities for scientists.
