Established in 1959, the Inter-American Development Bank ("IDB" or "Bank") is the main source of multilateral financing for economic, social, and institutional development in Latin America and the Caribbean with over $92 billion in assets as of December 2012. The Bank provides loans, grants, guarantees, policy advice and technical assistance to the public and private sectors of its borrowing member countries.
Private sector operations are carried out under the Vice Presidency for Private Sector and Non-Sovereign Guaranteed Operations (VPP) through the IDB Group’s four private sector windows: the Structured and Corporate Finance Department (SCF), the Opportunities for the Majority Initiative (OMJ), the Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF) and the Inter-American Investment Corporation (IIC). Each window focuses on different core constituencies – from base of the pyramid operations, to microenterprises, to small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), to large companies and projects, as well as investment funds, financial institutions of all sizes and sub-sovereigns.
The Office of Risk Management (RMG) is seeking a talented and experienced Credit Officer to strengthen its credit risk management group and manage the credit risk of the Bank's non-sovereign guaranteed operations.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The candidate’s main responsibilities will be, among others:
• To lead the independent credit risk assessment of complex corporate finance transactions, including reviewing and providing advice on financing structures, financial statements, consultant reports, financial models, and legal documentation in order to fully assess resulting credit risk and possible mitigants to assigned transactions;
• To work closely with multidisciplinary teams in the analysis of prospective transactions and make recommendations to mitigate the identified key credit risks, as part of the Bank's credit approval process;
• To review and approve the internal credit risk ratings applicable to the transactions assigned, considering all dimensions involved, including borrower risks, transaction structure risks, and the macro/political environment, as well as the envisioned probability of default, loss-given default, and expected recoveries;
• To work closely with the Special Assets Unit on troubled transactions to identify suitable debt restructuring strategy, steer jointly with that Unit and other stakeholders in the Bank the recovery efforts and propose loan provisions;
• To lead the review of assigned operations within the Bank's portfolio of non-sovereign guaranteed transactions and undertake periodic annual reviews of credit risk and underlying risk ratings;
• To provide support to the portfolio management unit and advice in the processing of all material waivers and amendments;
• To contribute to the development of technical tools and procedures/policies for credit risk management of the Bank;
• To provide guidance, and train junior credit risk officers;
• To represent the Office of RMG in events, seminars and workshops, within and outside the Bank, including helping with the setting up training events.
TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES
• Proven track-record in the assessment and management of key credit risks of complex transactions with a variety of products and structures, particularly for project finance deals;
• Experience in project design origination. Ability to analyze projects and to independently formulate balanced, well-reasoned recommendations and to effectively communicate such recommendations persuasively at credit review committees and to senior management;
• In-depth understanding of corporate credit risks; concrete transactional experience in agriculture and commodity companies is a plus. Ability to develop and apply specialized sector or strategic topical expertise to IDB Group projects.
• Proven knowledge and hands-on experience in credit risk management techniques, assessment of financing and legal structures, structuring, analysis of financial statements and debt repayment capacity, financial modeling, and sensitivity / stress testing analysis;
• Ability to manage portfolio credit risk exposure in an efficient manner and ability to build on knowledge of leading practices and best practice regarding credit risk management;
• Understanding and experience applying industry best practices in terms of economic capital and expected loss calculation;
• Experience in writing and reviewing risk management policies and guidelines;
• Very strong financial modeling and analytical skills. Proficiency with PC-based software, i.e., Excel (including financial modeling), Word, PowerPoint, etc.
• Excellent negotiation and communication skills, including the ability to drive consensus and project approval.

REQUIREMENTS
Education: Master's degree in finance, business administration, or relevant field.
Experience: at least 8 years of relevant experience in credit risk management (preferable with an international financial institution or rating agency in emerging markets, particularly in LAC).
Languages: Proficiency in English and Spanish is required. Working knowledge of Portuguese is desirable.
