The Bettis Laboratory has developed advanced Naval nuclear propulsion technology and provided technical support during the construction, operation, and maintenance of Naval nuclear propulsion plants for more than 50 years.  Bettis designed reactor plants for the first nuclear-powered submarines (USS NAUTILUS) and air craft carrier (USS ENTERPRISE), all of the Nimitz class aircraft carriers, and the USS SEAWOLF.  A major initiative for the Laboratory is the design of nuclear-powered propulsion plants and electrical power systems for the next class of U.S. Navy aircraft carriers.  The Laboratory's main sites are located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Idaho Falls, Idaho.  Other locations where Bettis provides support include Charleston, South Carolina, and shipyards located in Groton, Connecticut and Newport News, Virginia.  The Bettis Laboratory is operated for the Department of Energy by Bechtel Marine Propulsion Corporation.

The Naval Reactors Facility (NRF) is operated for the Department of Energy by Bechtel Marine Propulsion Corporation, and is located at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL).  NRF receives, examines and prepares naval spent nuclear fuel for temporary storage.  The information derived from the examinations provides engineering data on nuclear reactor environments, material behavior, and design performance.  This data is used to develop new technology and to improve the cost effectiveness of existing designs.

A Product Line Engineer (PLE) is responsible for the equipment and procedures that support the handling and examining of spent naval nuclear fuel.  This includes preparing for and executing the receipt, installation testing, checkout, and maintenance of government supplied equipment.  this also includes the design and procurement of support equipment.  A PLE will be responsible for providing deliverables to an overall project plan while meeting all naval nuclear program requirements and standards.  Also, a PLE will be expected to use project management principles in managing their deliverables (i.e. equipment and procedures.  A typical career path for an entry level engineer includes a year of training and mentoring followed by a few years of direct product line support.  direct product line support includes responding to and correcting equipment and procedure deficiencies in an operational environment and typically involves shift work.  After this training period an engineer will be assigned specific area of cognizance.

Education and Experience Requirements:

A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Systems, Industrial, or Process Engineering is required with a minimum 3.2/4.0 GPA from an accredited college or university..  Personnel with other technical degrees and equivalent experience will be considered. 

Other desirable qualifications include demonstrated project management, leadership experience with diverse teams, experience in the naval nuclear power program, shipyard or plant operations, and a demonstrated ability to work and communicate with outside organizatins. 

During initial training individuals will be required to obtain a qualification of Engineer of Radiological and Environmental Work.
