We are looking for a Lean operational expert to become the Production Manager over our Mill operations and who will bring new ideas and strong management skills to continually improve the manufacturing operations in one of Armstrong's most critical plants. You will lead a team in managing the plant operations, ensuring production goals are met or exceeded, promoting safety and environmental compliance and implementing process improvement initiatives using innovative tools such as Lean manufacturing, Six Sigma and equipment optimization.

The Production Manager is responsible for leading all manufacturing and production activities for the Mill operations of a unionized solid wood flooring plant which manufactures 500 different products and operates the largest kiln east of the Mississippi. With approximately 17 acres under roof (800,000 square feet), the facility operates 3 shifts and employs about 700 employees, making it the largest flooring plant in North America.
This position manages 2 department superintendants and 10 manufacturing supervisors and is ultimately responsible for more than 400 employees. We are looking for a high-potential person who can move into more senior positions, is comfortable as part of the Plant Leadership Team, has the abilities to lead Lean and Six Sigma process improvement initiatives and likes to work in an innovative team environment.
This is an exciting leadership opportunity in a highly visible position. The operations are complex, automated and use the latest modern management technology. Responsibilities include the following:
- Lead plant operations to meet or exceed production goals, including safety, throughput, yield, cost and quality.
- Promote and ensure a safe and environmentally compliant work environment by providing leadership to maintain a high level of awareness and organizational discipline for all corporate and plant policies.
- Oversee hiring, employee relations, employee development and production scheduling activities to ensure an effective and productive workforce.
- Facilitate positive employee and labor relations by frequently interacting with employees and Union representatives to discuss and help with problems or complaints; encourage Superintendents and Supervisors to do the same.
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives using tools such as Lean manufacturing, Six Sigma and other process improvement techniques.
- Promote continuous skill improvement to develop current and future Supervisors.
- Continually provide for assessment of and feedback on work performance of Superintendents, Supervisors and other plant support personnel.
- Ensure adequate recordkeeping and reporting for all production systems.
- Provide urgent response 24/7 to significant operational issues which include major downtime, quality, safety and environmental incidents including case management.
- Assist with capital planning, strategic planning and budgeting processes.
- Manage the plant against the established operational and capital budgets such that financial goals and cost reduction plans are met or exceeded.
- Work closely with maintenance and engineering to optimize productivity, quality, customer satisfaction, equipment performance and reliability.
- Actively engage in plant strategic and operating plans to ensure environmental and safety compliance while improving overall operating results.
- Promote excellence in housekeeping to achieve and maintain housekeeping standards by using 5S.
- Recommend and manage implementation of new process improvement projects and new raw materials related to safety, plant reliability and cost.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Operations Management or a related field.
- Twelve or more years of production management experience in a multi-shift environment with at least 3 years experience managing a large workforce.
- Prior experience in leading and managing manufacturing operations with responsibility for safety, quality, cost reduction and process improvement efforts.
- Lean Manufacturing experience required
- Strong change management skills and experience.
- Personal experience in leading Kaizen events.
- Strong management and leadership skills and demonstrated ability to effectively manage a diverse group of employees and build a team culture.
- Prior ownership and achievement of budgeted costs.
- Previous participation in capital and budget planning.
- Working knowledge of and commitment to current safety and environmental practices and regulations (including OSHA compliance).
- Highly effective data organization and communication skills (verbal, written, presentation) to effectively interact with all levels of the organization.
- Moderate computer proficiency with email and Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word and PowerPoint).
- Experience working with a unionized workforce
Desired Qualifications and Skills (these skills are a benefit, not required)
- MBA
- Lean certification
- At least two (2) successful transformational experiences in utilizing Lean as part of the catalyst and foundation for change either in a focused transformational leadership role or as part of the Senior Operating team driving the change. Demonstrated impact that translated to clear, bottom line performance results with step-function change.
- Formal Lean training from an "academy" organization either through direct consulting experience (i.e., Shingijutsu, TBM) or via organizations with deep, well-established Lean operating systems (Toyota, Danaher, etc.).
- Six Sigma Black Belt or Green Belt certification
- Experience in flooring, paper, plastics or similar manufacturing industry

With approximately 17 acres under roof, our Beverly Plant manufactures solid wood floor products and is the largest Kiln facility east of the Mississippi. It is one of the larger employers in the area with over 680 employees working multiple shifts in manufacture and shipment of our wood flooring products.
Located in the heart of West Virginia, Beverly is surrounded by beautiful mountain ridges, geological wonders, historic Civil War sites, state parks and national forest recreation areas. The town is also conveniently located within an hour's drive to some of the best ski resorts that West Virginia has to offer (Snow Shoe, Canaan Valley and Timberline).
