PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Direct the safe and efficient operation of the Blue Island production department, upholding HSE standards and insuring compliance with HSE policies and procedures. Lead by example. Monitor and drive plant performance indicators, including Overall Equipment Effectiveness, Right First Time, raw material and energy usage, and fixed cost spending. Improve the operating skills, technical knowledge and working environment of the workforce.
NATURE SCOPE:
The production shift supervisor has the overall responsibility for the operation of the production unit on shift. He/she must be able to create, promote, and sustain operations on shift that are (1) injury-free and environmentally responsible, (2) meets the production demands of the customers and business (i.e. on spec, on time, and on budget), and, (3) encourages and rewards involvement and accomplishment.
This requires a solid skill base in problem solving, communication, prioritization, and follow-up. It also requires an understanding of safe work practices and knowledge of process safety management and environmental regulations. The shift supervisor must be self-motivated to continually improve the unit and be able to address issues thoroughly and in a timely manner. He/she must demonstrate engagement with the workforce and be seen as the leader of the unit on shift.
The production shift supervisor must be an advocate of high standards each and every day, with particular emphasis placed on HSE performance. He/She must demonstrate awareness of HSE concerns and accept direct accountability for insuring adherence by their shift complement to all HSE standards, plant safety rules, and policies. This includes adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s), Management of Change (MOC) requirements, and housekeeping standards.
The production shift supervisor must develop and demonstrate a detailed knowledge of all aspects of the unit operations and utilize this knowledge to solve operational problems and initiate unit improvements. He/She must maintain and improve plant operations in terms of product quality, raw material and energy usage, maintenance costs, and personnel development.
This position requires a working knowledge of human resource policies and union/management issues. He/She must be able to recognize and reward good performance and improve poor performance through coaching, corrective action, and progressive discipline. He/She must maintain close contact with the Operations Manager/Production Superintendent, keeping him/her informed of issues in the unit so that the appropriate amount of support can be given.
Function as Site Emergency Coordinator during emergency situations occurring during night time and weekend hours.
Supervises staff that are hazardous waste generators and handlers.
REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND EXPERIENCES:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- 2 or 4 year technical degree preferred
- Minimum 5 years chemical plant operating experience
- Good interpersonal leadership skills with prior supervisory experience a plus.
- Ability to interact effectively with hourly workforce, operations management, other supervisors and plant personnel.
- Understanding of safe work practices, Process Safety Management, Incident investigation techniques, and safety environmental regulations.
- Ability to apply practical and/or engineering knowledge to solve plant problems and to implement improvement actions.
- Ability to assess, prioritize, and resolve production issues.
- Ability to develop a workforce through reward and recognition, coaching, corrective action and progressive discipline.
