Quality Engineer
Business Unit Summary:
The Slides and Specialty Glass Business Unit (SSGBU) provides hospitals, clinical laboratories, contract-research organizations, defense supply/general services administration and multi-industry OEM’s (specialty glass) with the broad portfolio of offerings including Microscope Slides, Coverglass, Microscopy, Microarray Substrates, Hand-care Products and Custom Glass. The SSGBU generates $125MM in annual revenue and has 700 employees in 5 countries. Our customers use our products for security and fast throughput in their labs. Our stable adhesion chemistries and designed-for-instrumentation features allow them to process specimens with the highest speed and accuracy.
Position Summary:
Leads or contributes in the implementation of assurances, process controls and Corrective and Preventive Action activities designed to meet or exceed internal and external requirements. Act as an effective leader or team member in supporting quality disciplines, decisions and practices. Apply sound, systematic, problem-solving methodologies in identifying, prioritizing, communicating and resolving quality issues. Develop, refine and document QA Test and Inspection procedures. Select and order equipment as required. Evaluate and recommend QA sampling plans based on desired confidence limits, process capabilities, and manufacturing/inspection methods and equipment. Develop and administer technical investigation and corrective action programs to resolve recurring quality problems. Must be able to handle and prioritize many tasks simultaneously; work well with minimal direct supervision; and effectively utilize time and resources
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead quality related activities and ensure QMS compliance. Assess quality systems and overall manufacturing capabilities.
- Assist in defining technical requirements for inspection activities and criteria, including gauging and tooling, measurement systems and records Engineering and Incoming Inspection.
- Support First Article Inspection (FAI) activities, including defining critical –to-quality attributes, inspection plans and documentation requirements and analysis of results.
- Troubleshooting process issues. Interface with in-house and outside sub-contract suppliers on quality issues.
- Drive corrective actions to eliminate recurring supplied product deficiencies. Manage the process for timely review, disposition and communication of root cause fix.
- Works with New Product Introduction teams to provide quality plans and analysis of capabilities. Perform supplier quality surveys and qualification audits.
- Leads and coordinates containment activities if quality spills occur. Provides risk analysis.
- Work in team environment with Manufacturing, RD, Purchasing and suppliers to improve quality while reducing material scrap and cost.
- Support transition to a Lean Manufacturing Environment.
Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:
- Four-year college degree in Engineering or equivalent discipline.
- Minimum 5 years experience in Quality Engineering
- Experience with Internal auditing of an ISO 9000 Quality Management System
- Strong working knowledge of quality related tools, such as structured problem solving, FMEA’s, SPC, DOE’s, DFA’s, and Six Sigma.
- Ability to analyze technical information and provide recommendations. Strong presentation skills.
- Able to coordinate multiple projects supporting customer satisfaction, production efficiency, and supplied product issues resolution.
- Strong working knowledge with various computer software such as Mini-tab.
- Experience with lean manufacturing practices.
