Job Description:
James Hardie Building Products is a leader in manufacturing and development of technologies, materials and manufacturing processes for fiber cement building materials. James Hardie Research USA is a key RD Center for such developmental purpose. As an RD Scientist I, the incumbent will be responsible for working with other scientists and lab technicians in the RD lab to develop chosen new ideas/concepts into practical solutions and implement them to realize the value of RD work for the business. In this position, the incumbent will report to the Lab Supervisor.
Position
Responsibilities:
As an RD Scientist I, responsibilities will include but not limited to:
- Understand project objectives and expected outcomes
- Conduct various testing procedures in RD labs
- Assist in developing effective plans for the projects/tasks at hand
- With guidance and assistance as needed, conduct experimental investigations for expected outcomes
- Help and supporting other project teams or groups when needed.
- Show potential to learn and grow with in the company

The scope of the RD Scientist I position is broken down into four areas:
- Understand project objectives and their impact on business
- Ability to: collect, organize and analyze data; summarize findings; develop conclusions and recommendations
- Perform analyses of limited scope and complexity and subsequently interpret the data and prepare results
- Have a demonstrably a high skill set; particularly in problem solving, lateral thinking and results interpretation
As an RD Scientist I, he or she is accountable to the lab supervisor in terms of:
- Submit project/task plan to his or her manager on time with agreed quality
- Complete experiments, tests and research on time with sound quality
- Submit project reports on time
- Be honest with results
- Willing to be challenged
- Completing other assigned tasks, such as participating pilot and factory trials and safety responsibilities, on time with agreed quality
Position Requirements:
This position requires methodical and logical science to be applied towards product testing and development. The list of skills and requirements below is a general list which describes a person who should excel in this RD Scientist I position.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
- Laboratory experiment planning
- Independent and logical thinking
- Be able to deliver scientific and practical approaches for problem solving
- Hands on capability to set up experimental apparatus and rigs
- Read procedures and apply the test methods after reasonable training time. Few examples: physical properties measurement such as weight, length, volume, mechanical properties measurement such as tensile and compression strength, Chemical analysis such as XRD phase analysis, Chromatography, and Spectroscopy techniques (XRF, IR, ICP)
- Detail oriented, accurate in fine measurement, curious and have scientific observation skills
- Time management
- Motivated and outgoing self-starter who is looking to continually advance within the organization
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Work well in a team environment
Education/Experience Required:
Different combinations of experience and educations will be considered for qualification of this position:
- BS in chemistry
- At least 1 year of work-related experience in a laboratory environment, preferably performing various inorganic testing methods
- Knowledge and experiences in the following areas will be a plus:
Building products industry
Material property and performance characterization using mechanical, physical, and/or chemical testing/analysis will be a plus
Formulation and process development
Technology implementation
Statistics and experimental design
