Registered Nurse

JOB SUMMARY: 
Conducts mental health and risk assessment of all patients presenting in the Emergency Room with a mental health crisis, and recommends appropriate dispositions to the ER physician. The position involves working in partnership with Emergency Room staff and with other hospital services and community resources. Contributes to ensuring there is a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors.  Please note a new model of care will be introduced for Crisis Services in Fall 2011, which may result in some changes in responsibilties.

QUALIFICATIONS: 
• Current registration with College of Nurses of Ontario
• 3 years (minimum) experience in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing
• Certification (CNA), Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing preferred, or willingness to obtain certification.
• Current valid CPR certification
• Post diploma in Psychiatric Nursing preferred
• Working knowledge of Mental Health Act
• Ability to practice in accordance with Canadian Standards of Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing
• Training and practical experience conducting crisis assessments and intervention
• Proficiency in applying the skills of de-escalation de-briefing
• Advanced de-escalation, Code White training preferred (training will be provided)
• Extensive experience managing and responding to a diverse range of psychiatric emergencies
• Ability to be flexible and adapt in an ever changing environment
• Demonstrated skills in biopsychosocial assessment, mental status examination, differential diagnosis, treatment and transitional care of mental health clients
• Detailed knowledge of community services/resources
• Verbal/written communication skills.  Computer skills.
• Contributes to ensuring there is a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors
• Ability to take initiative and work independently and as a part of a team.
• Excellent organizational skills
• High level of maturity, professionalism acceptance of personal responsibility
• Willingness to take on a team lead role as required within the larger team
• Knowledge of recovery principles
• Good attendance record
