Research Accountant

East Malling Limited is a subsidiary within the  East Malling Group which includes East Malling Research (EMR) an independent provider of top-class research, development and consultancy. Serving the food chain with a particular emphasis on perennial horticultural crops and their interactions with the environment.

We are looking to recruit a Research Accountant. The successful candidate will provide specialist financial management and administrative support to EMR’s research programmes. This key post will be the interface between the administration and the research and establish professional and productive relationships with a wide range of funders and other stakeholders.

Main job activities

Administration of awarded research grants/funding

• Preparation of claims, invoices and reports to funders in a timely manner in the required format
• Management accounting service for projects
• Monitoring spending ensuring it is contained within budget
• Prepare forecasts as required
• Review and assessment of glasshouse and farm costs charged to projects
• Provide and comment on key performance indicators
• Assessment of vacancy requests for new research posts
• Provide training and development support to research colleagues, both through briefing sessions and on a one to one basis on financial aspects of project management
• Responding to requests for information from our funders

Preparation of grant/funding proposals

• Assist research staff in the preparation of funding proposals and bids ensuring that they are costed appropriately and financial and regulatory approvals are in place
• Keep up to date with funders financial terms and conditions
• Support research colleagues in negotiating funders financial terms and conditions

Management of finance team

• Responsibility for payroll and pensions administration
• Management and development of a team of three finance staff including payroll

You will have a strong financial background with significant administrative research and costing experience in a similar organisation and will have knowledge and understanding of research funding mechanisms in the UK along with the ability to develop and maintain relationships with research funding organisations. You will be educated to “A” Level standard with a recognised accounting qualification, knowledge of technical and management accounting principles is a pre-requisite.
