Research Associate

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

This position will report to a lead Portfolio Manager of one of the company's investment strategies.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

We are seeking an individual to join Matthews to assist the team members in conducting fundamental research and investment analysis. Specifically, this individual will be responsible for assisting the team in conducting both qualitative
and quantitative analyses, focusing on industry analysis, business models, products and services, management quality and competitive advantages for Asian companies. In addition, the individual would be responsible for gathering and disseminating information about the portfolio and portfolio companies to both internal and
 external stakeholders.

 

This position will be based out of Matthews' headquarters in San Francisco and will be responsible for supporting decision making for a series of SEC-registered mutual funds that specialize in international markets.

Responsibilities:

•Monitor the performance of funds and the underlying portfolio companies by generating reports.
•Collect, process and organize daily information on companies in the investment universe.
•Engage in production of marketing related materials (including data extraction) and in ongoing
client communication.
•Take part in ongoing research efforts and periodical publications of the team.
•Assist in the development of financial and valuation screens/models, reflecting the company's business
 performance and forecast, in particular with an eye towards modeling issuer's cash flows, credit quality
and prospects for dividend payments.
•Generate investment ideas for our income-focused Asia Pacific funds through bottom-up fundamental resear
ch of companies, using both qualitative and quantitative analysis spanning the entire capital structure,
 and development of proprietary screening tools.

Specific Requirements:

•Demonstrable conviction and interest in Asian markets.
•1-2 years of prior experience in capital markets (asset management, equity research, investment banking,
 insurance, private equity, consulting). Any entrepreneurial experience (especially in Asian markets)
 would be a plus.
•Keen interest in investing.
•Must be an independent thinker and a self-starter.
•Solid communication skills and proven writing abilities.
•Solid Excel skills and working proficiency using research tools, such as Bloomberg and Factset.
•Commonsense.

Education Requirements:

•4 year university degree

Preferences:

•MBA or equivalent.
•A CFA charter holder or a candidate.
•Asian language skills (ASEAN language skills in particular).
•Understanding of Asian economies and regulatory environments.
