General Overview The Research Fellow performs work to support a laboratory?s research endeavors and carry out a research project with minimal supervision from the project head and the PI of the laboratory. This includes design and execution of highly specialized experiments, collection of and accurate recording of procedures and results, and summarization of the findings for publication. Responsibilities 1. Designs and executes experiments. The individual may perform surgery and provide postoperative care following procedures on animals and conduct in vitro studies. 2. Collects and records study data, as well as maintains laboratory notebooks. 3. Synthesizes and interprets information obtained from the experiments, performs data analysis using advanced statistical techniques, and writes manuscripts for publication. 4. Participates and present in Lab meetings and research seminars. 5. Supervises technical and animal care personnel involved in the project. 6. Participates in the upkeep of the laboratory. This includes keeping both direct and general work spaces clean and tidy and helping maintain an overall safe and clean environment. Report equipment malfunctions and needs to management. 7. Works safely within the laboratory environment and in performing work duties. Wear personal protective equipment as required. 8. Assists in the preparation and submission of protocol applications and grant applications. 9. Provides training and oversight to lab personnel, such as research technicians, who may jointly work on a project. Directly oversee the work of technicians and lab assistants as needed. 10. Identifies and recommends equipment for use in the lab?s studies. 11. Responsible for troubleshooting problems and instructing others in highly specialized techniques. 12. Responsible for the oversight and coordination of scheduling all procedures. 13. Presents papers or appears as principal or secondary author in publications. Supervisory Responsibility: Supervises technical and animal care personnel involved in the project. May supervise lab assistants or research technicians in lab. Fiscal Responsibility: Cost-effectively requisitions, distributes and uses supplies. Skills/Abilities/Competencies ? Technical skills may include, but not limited to, animal surgery, Western blot, ELISA, and histochemistry. Cell culture experience would be advantageous. ? Self-motivated and able to work in a team ? Must be able to work late evenings and weekends, as necessary. ? Ability to work carefully, accurate and consistent with instruction or protocol ? Must be able to work safely and properly use protective equipment ? Excellent verbal and written communication skills ? Proficiency in Word, Powerpoint, Excel, and literature searches helpful Qualifications PhD in biology or related fields. PhD graduate or less than 3 years post-doc training. Working Environment Duties will be performed in a research laboratory. This setting may create contact or exposure to one or more of the following: chemicals, fluids, sharp instruments and other supplies and equipment consistent with a research lab. Contact or exposure may be airborne or physical. Work schedule can be flexible depending on laboratory needs.
