Resident Director/Academic Support Coordinator Job in River Forest, Illinois Us

The position of Resident Director/Academic Support Coordinator is one that requires a commitment to the overall success of our students. Within this position, the professional will be dividing time between addressing the issues and needs encountered as a resident director within a community of 140 diverse residents, with a paraprofessional staff of six (6) resident assistants; with the academic support needs and coordination needs of our students with disabilities in the classroom.

Resident Directors are the primary supervisor's for our Resident Assistants and coordinate programming efforts within the residential communities they oversee. Furthermore they are expected to support all aspects of student development and programming on campus, seek out faculty and staff involvement within their communities, and to develop opportunities to further enhance the Concordia college experience. In line with the mission of our university, Resident Directors play an important role in supporting the spiritual development of our students and so an understanding and commitment to the Christian ethics of love, forgiveness, patience, and faith as well as a desire to support students in their own faith and relationship with God is important for a person to possess.

The Academic Support Coordinator works to assure that our students have their accommodation and learning needs met within our Academic Center for Excellence. This position serves as the initial contact with students and faculty in coordinating disability accommodations within the classroom. As such, a commitment to service and strong communication and people skills are necessary.

In the area of the residential community:
Within the Department of Residential Life, this position, in coordination with the professional staff team and under the direction of the Assistant Dean of Students for Residential Life and Student Conduct works to accomplish the following:

Supervision of paraprofessional staff
o Supervise 6-10 paraprofessionals consisting of our resident assistants
o Assist in the opening of residential communities and preparation for the academic year
o Utilize team management approach to facilitate one on one meetings on at least a bi-weekly basis and weekly building wide staff meetings
o Implement the departmentally coordinated staff selection and placement process to meet the needs of each community
o Plan and implement hall specific training to complement departmental training processes under the guidance and approval of the Director of Residential Life
o Evaluate paraprofessional staff formally once a semester and informally as appropriate
o Provide guidance and assistance to staff in their on-going professional development
o Lead student staff in their efforts to 1) assess the needs of students, 2) meet those needs and 3) assess how effective their efforts have been
o Assist the Director of Housing in room assignments, changes and the housing reapplication process in the Spring Semester

Academic Support
o Facilitate academic events and activities within your communities and in support of your Resident Assistants' efforts
o Promote student involvement in academic events, activities, and opportunities on-campus
o Coordinate faculty recognition and involvement efforts in hall
o Coordinate academic achievement recognition incentive programs
o In coordination with the Office of Academic Advising follow-up regularly with
residents that appear on in our Academic Early Warning system to help address academically related concerns

Community Development
o Promote community development at the community and hall level
o Help communities plan and implement in-hall programming in coordination with the Director of Residential Life and the Director of Student Activities.
o Advise resident assistants to conduct discussions on damages or vandalism
o Promote participation in Intramural programs; recognize achievements; participate with teams if interested
o Liaison with other Student Affairs offices and student support services as is necessary

Student Conduct
o Adjudication of designated student conduct violations within your community through a developmentally based, educational approach with students
o Communication and coordination with necessary persons for the completion of assigned sanctions and appeals
o Maintain accurate records pertaining to student conduct adjudication

On-going and Systematic Assessment
o Work with students, student staff, and other departmental staff to assess the needs of each community and the degree to which those needs are being met
o Be visible on floors talking informally with residents about academic, personal or community success/issues/concerns
o Relay relevant information to the appropriate office or person
o Use the information gathered to make and/or suggest improvements

Administrative Responsibilities
o Distribute information to staff and students as needed.
o Communicate with Physical Plant coordinator any facilities or maintenance related concerns or issues. Maintain log of service requests and follow-up with Physical Plant when necessary to assure their completion
o Attend weekly Professional Staff meetings with Director of Residential Life
o Maintain Resident Assistant files as directed and in a timely fashion
o Participate in bi-weekly one on one's with Director of Residential Life
o Monitor Programming budget for hall.
o Participation in ongoing Professional Development opportunities, pertaining to your role, both within the department and/or within other professional organizations and or networks

Crisis Intervention Response
o Participate in rotating on-call secondary schedule and carry appropriate pager and complete appropriate paperwork in a timely fashion
o When appropriate, work with Concordia Security Department, and other qualified persons on immediate response to incidents in hall
o Respond to students and parents as appropriate; work with Director of Residential Life on more serious issues
o Follow-up with individual students and the community as appropriate
o Maintain effective records

In the Academic Center for Excellence:
Within the Academic Center for Excellence, this position would work under the direction of our Director of Academic Support Services to accomplish the following:

o Facilitate the application process for students needing learning accommodations related to disabilities.
o Maintain records of students seeking and gaining accommodations.
o Facilitate the arrangements of classroom accommodations with faculty based upon student needs.
o Hire and supervise student staff providing assistance as proctors, readers, and note takers.
o Facilitate the provision of educational activities given in a non-standard learning and teaching format such as materials for vision or hearing impaired.
o Act as a mentor and point of contact for our students with disabilities.
o May be asked to teach an Academic Success Course.
