All the primary duties within this document will be performed according to established policies, procedures and guidelines within the department and the Medical Center .

JOB SUMMARY:

**The American Heart Association Instructor is responsible and accountable for facilitating the AHA courses for personnel throughout the New Hanover Health Network, who care for patients in various developmental stages. This includes maintaining the standards set by the American Heart Association.

PRIMARY JOB DUTIES:

1. Facilitates American Heart Association courses for all personnel including preparing teaching materials.

2. Maintains a current knowledge base related to resuscitation issues. Develops and teaches Code Blue and American Heart Association resuscitation classes. Prepares manuals and other teaching materials related to American Heart Association training.

3. Prepares personnel to participate in resuscitation efforts using the American Heart Association guidelines and acts as a resource when issues arise.

4. Participates in training when new products/equipment are introduced for AHA courses.

5. Demonstrates standards of performance (ownership, teamwork communication, compassion) that support patient satisfaction and principles of service excellence

6. Demonstrates the Core Values of the nursing profession and the network.

7. Performs other duties as assigned

ESSENTIAL JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

1. Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, either through an AD, Diploma or BSN program

2. Licensure/Certifications: North Carolina State Board of Nursing. AHA BLS CPR Certification. Some departments have additional advanced CPR requirements as listed on staff annual education record.

3. Experience: Three years acute care nursing, preferably in clinical specialty. Experience as clinical educator or in a teaching role. Has a current knowledge of nursing principles and techniques; adult learning theory and classroom management. Is an effective speaker before large and small groups. Has knowledge of and the ability to use audiovisual equipment. Must be able to communicate and be literate in the English language.
