JOB SUMMARY:  Under the general supervision of the Director/Associate Director, renders professional nursing care in accordance with physician's treatment plans and standards of practice/care.  In doing so, assesses patient's condition, plans patient care, administers prescribed drugs, provides treatments, provides appropriate patient education, evaluates patient's progress, records pertinent observations and report responses to drugs and treatments.  Assists with examinations and prepares instruments and equipment.  Advocates for patient in order to achieve the best possible outcome.  

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.                    Supports and maintains the Mission, Core Values and expected customer service behaviors of St. Joseph Medical Center.

 

2.             Maintains competency and knowledge of current standards of practice, trends and developments in his/her related scope of practice by reading books, journals and other literature and attending related seminars, conferences and the like.  

 

3.            Participates in ongoing quality improvement activities.

 

4.             Uses nursing process to provide all levels of patient care:

 

5.             Assesses patient's condition based upon observation, examination, and/or interview, physician's diagnosis, laboratory findings, age-related issues and other pertinent information.

 

6.             Implements nursing interventions to achieve progress toward expected patient outcomes or to stabilize a patient's condition and/or prevent complications.

 

7.             Evaluates and documents patients' response to nursing care and modifies or revises treatment plans, and/or contacts physicians as circumstances require.   Participates in interdisciplinary patient care planning in order to plan and evaluate effective patient care.

 

8.             Provides patient (family) education based on diagnosis, treatment plan or prescribed medical regimen in accordance with patient (family) readiness and ability to learn.

 

9.             Uses professional judgment to prepare and prioritize the patient's plan of care consistent with patient assessment data and physician's treatment plans and professional standards of practice/care.  Incorporates the patient's physiological, psychological, cultural, developmental and spiritual needs into the plan of care.

 

10.           Directs and delegates support personnel in implementing patient's plan of care, provides supervision and guidance, and demonstrates methods, as necessary, to correct deviation from established standards.

 

11.           Renders professional nursing care including administering medications, starting intravenous fluids and blood products.  Performs both complex and routine treatments as prescribed by physicians or as warranted by                        patient's condition.  

 

12.           Assists in orienting and training new Associates, Nurse Interns, student nurses and contract personnel.  Serves as a resource person for departmental Associates in resolving patient care problems.  Collaborates with hospital departments in order to resolve operational problems. 

 

13.           Promotes good stewardship of hospital resources while ensuring quality patient care. 

 

14.           Implements measures to prevent exposure to infectious pathogens and communicable conditions.

 

15.           Promotes a culture of safety for patients and associates through proper identification, proper reporting, documentation and prevention of medical errors in a non-punitive environment.

 

16.           Follows the St. Joseph Medical Center guidelines related to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), designed to prevent or detect unauthorized disclosure of Protected Health Information (PHI).

 

17.           Provides rapid assessment in psychiatric emergencies and directs intervention as appropriate.

 

18.           Ensures that all patients' rights, including confidentiality, are strictly adhered to by all disciplines.

19.           Continually assesses the milieu for safety and directs intervention as necessary.

 

20.           Performs basic physical assessments and facilitates medical treatment and/or transfer of patients to medical

units for treatment.

 

21.           Provides pre and post-care to patients who are receiving electroconvulsive therapy.

 

22.           Provides education on medications, symptom recognition and management, social skills, etc., to patients individually and in group settings.

 

23.           Facilitates the process of involuntary commitment of patients.

 

 

24.      Supportive of the compliance program set forth by SJMC and demonstrated by:

a.        Upholds the Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance.

b.       Adheres to and helps to enforce all compliance policies relevant to his/her area.

c.        Assures timely compliance education as requested by the Compliance Officer and/or through corporate initiatives.

 

25.       Sets an example to all staff in their daily activities.

 

26.       Must complete 10 medical audit records satisfactorily; 5 for 12 records and 0 for less than 12.
