Ruby/Rails Developer at Power Auctions (Washington, DC) (allows remote)

Job Description

We are currently looking for software developers with Ruby on Rails experience to join our growing team. Emphasis is more on a solid understanding of programming and hands on experience with Ruby, rather than assembling quick mashups of third party gems. We like to hire people who can code, not those who just look good on paper or can solve brain teasers. So if you're highly motivated, can work independently, have some solid Rails experience, and above all can write clean, maintainable solutions to challenging, interesting, and often fairly complex problems, we'd love to hear from you.

You will be working with our Dev QA teams to customize our auction software for different auction designs and particular customers. This requires custom development ranging from coming up with new algorithms to general backend development and to building beautiful and functional front ends for handling data with complex structure. Guidance on what to build will come partly from clients (directly or through a project manager) and, most importantly, the world's leading experts on auction design and fellow engineers who have worked with them for years.

About Power Auctions

Power Auctions is a leading provider of innovative software and services for custom high-stakes online auctions. We have run well over 100 auctions on 6 continents, and our system was used for selling 6% of the world's rough diamonds, procure all of New England's electricity, and many other unique projects.

Our main office is in Washington, DC, close to our most important government clients. Although we have been around for well over a decade, we maintain a startup-like atmosphere. Our software development process follows agile practices, and many team members work remotely.

Our software team works closely with the world's leading experts on auction design, implementing innovative ideas from an academic environment in real-world applications of high economic and social impact. For example, we are currently helping the government of Botswana to sell, for the first time, diamonds mined in the country directly to diamond dealers, for a market price determined in a fair, transparent, and efficient auction.

Joel Test score: 11 out of 12

The Joel Test is a twelve-question measure of the quality of a software team.
