Safety Advisor - Utilities Environmental Protection

Business unit information

Environmental Safety Management (ESM) serves as corporate champion for environmental and occupational safety initiatives at The City. ESM proactively manages risk and leads the policy, best practice and strategic planning in these areas. We support efforts to reduce Calgary's ecological footprint and co-ordinate The City's role in community environmental sustainability initiatives. You will play a significant role in ensuring Calgary's environment is protected as well as creating a safe workplace for City employees.

  

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Team Lead, the Safety Advisor will support both corporate program development and business unit safety management. Primary duties include:

Provide professional safety advice and assistance to management and employees to ensure awareness of and adherence to all safety related acts, regulations and codes. 

Support the implementation and ongoing continual improvement of The City of Calgary Occupational Health Safety (OHS) Management System for a business unit or in support of a corporate strategy, through program development. 

Co-ordinate and/or participate in occupational health and safety audit activities, including the development and communication of action plans. 

Facilitate and assist staff in conducting hazard assessments as required and initiate the hazard review process as defined in The City of Calgary Occupational Health Safety Management System. 

Assist with emergency response planning activities and incident investigation as required, and ensure corrective actions generated from emergency response tests and/or investigations are addressed. 

Co-ordinate the investigation and documentation of non-conformances (i.e. incident investigation results, audit recommendations) in consultation with key stakeholders; provide information and participate in the Management Review process to evaluate the business unit's overall performance in The City of Calgary's Occupational Health Safety Management System. 

Work collaboratively by partnering with all stakeholders (internal and external) and with other members of The City of Calgary Safety Advisor Network. 

 

Qualifications

The successful applicant must possess at minimum, a certificate (equivalent to one year of full-time study) in Occupational Health and Safety, plus a minimum of five years working experience in the capacity of a safety professional. A valid Class 5 Driver's Licence (or provincial equivalent) with no more than six demerits and no current suspensions or charges pending is required. A Canadian Registered Safety Professional designation (CRSP) would be an asset. Previous OHS auditing experience or knowledge of Alberta Partners in Injury Reduction (PIR) program would also be considered an asset. Strong communication (oral and written), decision-making and conflict management skills are required. Initiative, strategic and analytical thinking, planning, organizational and problem solving skills are necessary for this position.
