DUTIES: This position will provide professional safety services to the five parks, on a rotational basis established by a letter of agreement between the involved parks and offices. This position will serve as the subject matter expert and principle advisor responsible for developing, directing, and coordinating the safety and occupational health programs for each location. The incumbent's work will have direct impact on the safety of park employees, volunteers, and visitors. Major duties include: implementing, managing, and directing safety and occupational health programs for the involved parks. coordinating and/or conducting annual inspections of parks in accordance with applicable standards. providing guidance to and/or leading teams in investigating incidents/accidents and making recommendations for improvement. developing, administering, conducting, and monitoring safety training programs. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work requires physical exertion such as frequent walking and hiking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces, crouching, climbing, stooping, crawling under buildings and in attics, etc. Occasionally is required to ride as a passenger in light fixed wing aircraft and/or helicopters, and to ride in or operate small watercraft. The use of personal protective equipment (hard hat, steel-toed boots, gloves, eye goggles, and respirators) is required due to exposure to hazardous occupational environments. The interpersonal relationships and conflicts involved with compliance and problem resolution can produce high job stress. Frequent travel away from the incumbent's office is required. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Incumbent is subject to exposure to operating machines and equipment, hazardous materials, high noise level, hazardous gases, fumes and dust, hazardous waste materials, and other occupational environments. Protective clothing and equipment is required. Incumbent also serves in a staff position in a heated/air conditioned office setting. However, field work often occurs in rough terrain, cold as well as hot and dry weather, underground work, and exposure to high electrical energy and heights. Emergency operations may require working in nighttime operations, in adverse terrain and all climatic conditions. May also be exposed to insect bites, snakes, and other hazards found in and around buildings and facilities. Cliamte is semi-arid with hot summers, mild winters, and approximately 10 inches of rainfall per year. AREA INFORMATION/HOUSING INFORMATION: Carlsbad Caverns National Park is located 27 miles from the city of Carlsbad in southeastern New Mexico. The Park, at an elevation of 4400 feet, has a semi-arid climate with hot summers, mild winters, abundant sunshine, low humidity, and approximately 10 inches of rainfall per year. Carlsbad (population 26,000) has all amenities and services including medical and dental facilities, motels, banks, restaurants, churches, grocery stores, department stores, and several recreation facilities. Schools K-12, are available and also the New Mexico State University Branch. Other services can be found in Albuquerque (275 miles), El Paso, Texas (170 miles), Lubbock, Texas (180 miles), or Midland/Odessa, Texas (140 miles). Recreation opportunities are plentiful with Guadalupe Mountains National Park located 50 miles from the city of Carlsbad, two state parks (Brantley Lake and Living Desert Zoo) and the Lincoln National Forest within an hour's drive.
