Safety Compliance Manager

Airgas Mid America, a subsidiary of Airgas USA, LLC. the nations leading distributor of industrial, medical and specialty gases and welding supplies, has a Safety Compliance Manager position available.

Four Safety Compliance Managers share safety and compliance responsibilities throughout the region which stretches from Missouri to Maryland.

We currently have an opportunity available for a Safety Compliance Manager in the Northern Division of Airgas-Mid America, which encompasses 17 locations in Indiana and northern Kentucky.

This position may be based in Indianapolis, Louisville, or Evansville, IN and reports to the Vice President of Safety and Compliance.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Develop, implement and manage safety programs and procedures that will reduce the frequency and severity of personal injuries and vehicle accidents.

Provide environmental, health, and safety expertise to ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.

Perform periodic safety and compliance audits for facilities within the region.

Ensure the proper reporting, investigation, and corrective action for vehicle accidents, personal injury accidents, property damage, near-miss incidents, and customer incidents involving Airgas supplied products.

Promote the effective supervision, management, motivation and training of all Airgas associates in areas of personal safety, health, regulatory compliance, and environmental concerns.

Ensure compliance with Airgas' safety programs, policies, and procedures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

* Education: A bachelor's degree in Safety, Engineering, or related technical field, or other BS degree plus equivalent relevant experience.
* Experience: At least 5 years experience in the safety management of an industrial manufacturing and distribution company, or 3 years safety management experience and a Certified Safety Professional or similar safety accreditation.
* Strong proficiency in the Microsoft suite of programs, including Word, PowerPoint and Excel. Experience in Access is a plus.
* Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team.
* Highly motivated self-starter, who can effectively prioritize, multi-task and manage to accomplish objectives within tight deadlines.
* Organizational skills and attention to detail are essential.
* Outstanding communication skills including written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
* Ability to perform extensive travel for training, auditing, and incident review purposes.
* Ability to perform work during prolonged standing up to 8 hours or more; frequent bending, stooping, crouching, reaching, grasping, feeling and repetitive motion also required.
* Must be able to qualify as a member of Airgas Emergency Response Organization/ Hazmat Team.
* Must be able to work outdoors in a wide range of temperatures and weather conditions.
* Must be able to operate in a drug-free workplace.
* Ability to be on call" 24/7 for emergencies and to respond to DOT- related questions associated with the shipment of hazardous materials.

* The nature of this position demands discretion, good judgment, and prompt, accurate decision-making, as well as the management of complex situations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

* Complete periodic and one-time safety and compliance reports in a timely fashion.
* Work with the safety team to implement consistent, standardized processes and policies where appropriate.
* Conduct facility audits to ensure compliance with the Airgas Safety Program and work with management to develop and implement improvements.
* Coach and guide associates and managers regarding safety compliance issues.
* Identify and establish training requirements.
* Provide training, or schedule training by others, and provide updates of the training requirements as they change.
* Assure that safety meeting and training attendance are properly documented, in accordance with Airgas procedures and regulatory agency requirements.
* Address specific reporting and record keeping requirements of the EPA, DOT, OSHA, and FDA, as well as other pertinent safety/regulatory compliance matters.
* Coordinate the efforts of the Safety and Incident Review Committees to reduce the frequency and severity of accidents and injuries.
* Monitor monthly safety meetings and training conducted at facility locations. Compile reports addressing the efforts and effectiveness of the local meetings, to both regional and local management.
* Direct the compliance efforts in the area of Compressed Medical Gas operations to assure compliance with the FDA. This will include annual reviews of manufacturing facilities, and the training and certification of employees.
* Responsible for all environmentally-related regulatory compliance efforts including the provisions of SARA, RMP, and Waste Management.
* Attend facility audits conducted by the corporate safety department at locations within the region.
* Work closely with the operations group to ensure manufacturing and distribution activities are performed in a safe manner in compliance with applicable company policies and regulatory considerations.
* Direct compliance efforts in the area of the U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
* Coordinate security activities and protocols in support of DOT, Homeland Security, and other regulatory initiatives.
* Prepare state, federal, and local environmental, health, and safety reports as required.
