POSITION SUMMARY
The North American Safety Manager reports to the CertainTeed Gypsum Director of Safety, and will provide leadership within the safety program to CertainTeed Gypsum NA (CTG) that is consistent with the Vision, Mission, Values and Objectives of the company. Interfaces with Saint-Gobain and CertainTeed Health, Safety Environment (HSE) groups to participate in development of programs and facilitate the implantation of processes and procedures throughout CTG. Ensures all Safety activities meet or exceed corporate and government standards and continually improve our standards. Coach plant Safety Site Champions as they provide a safe working environment for all employees, contractors and visitors.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
• Responsible for the continued development and implementation of the organization’s safety program within CTG.
• Organize the Safety program for the western region including the planning, training, auditing, budgets and implementation.
• Active participant in the development of standards, policies, and procedures for Saint-Gobain and CertainTeed. Recommend policies and procedures to assure regulatory compliance for implementation in support of company’s goals and objectives regarding occupational safety issues.
• Develops and coach plant safety leaders.
• Ensure compliance with established company policies and governmental regulations.
• Directs training programs and upkeeps media programs to increase proficiencies of company personnel in occupational safety matters. These programs will include WHMIS, HAZCOM, safe job procedures, hazard identification, accident investigation and management responsibilities.
• Consults with employees and contractors on aspects on the design and use of equipment and facilities as they relate to all safety functions.
• Keeps abreast of and assess compliance with related federal, state or provincial and local legislations and ensure all required reports are compiled and submitted to required agencies.
• Lead in the investigation of serious accidents and injuries and co-operate in the preparation of material and evidences for company use in hearings, lawsuits and insurance investigations.
• Manages Worker’s Compensation programs including claims management, the return to work program and the appeals process with the appropriate Board(s).
• Resource for issues relating to occupational safety issues.
• Performs SMAT and TASK audits and facilitates training of same.
• Monitor health, safety and environmental results and provide analysis of the results with a view to improvement and audit progress towards completion of established company programs. Maintain all records and statistics including the review of experience rating reports.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Represents CertainTeed Gypsum in related community or industry groups, associations and programs.
• Undertake studies and projects as necessary when assigned by management.
• Other related duties as needed.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED
• Associate’s degree in technical field preferred, or 10 years of equivalent training and work experience which provides a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of Occupational Health Safety principles, practices and OSHA and MSHA regulations.
• 10 plus years of applied professional experience in safety preferably in an industrial/manufacturing environment.
• Prior experience with design and delivery of training programs, Occupational Health Safety, Mine Safety Health Administration, and Worker’s Compensation.
• Formal training of related safety programs.
• Excellent communicator with all levels of the organization using presentations and reports to convey information.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
PREFERRED OR DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health Safety preferred.
• Experience in a multi-plant manufacturing setting.
• Gypsum board industry experience.
FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY
Assists with establishment of annual department budget and manages spending to the budget.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
No direct supervisory responsibility but collaborates with all employees including management and coordinates work across departments and/or organization.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Works in an office manufacturing plant environment with exposure to dust, chemicals, temperature changes and noise. Position requires extensive travel (40-70%) within North America, occasionally overseas via airplanes and rental cars. Long hours are frequently required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Job requires bending, stooping, climbing, entering confined spaces, navigating rough terrain and infrequent lifting of up to 50lbs. Must be able to wear mandated personal protective equipment per areas accessed.
