Safety Specialist Job in Kennedy Space Center, Florida Us

High school diploma or equivalent with specialized training from a vocational, community college or accredited institution. Five years related experience which includes safety inspection and accident investigation. Must possess working knowledge of OSHA, NASA, Air Force, and other Federal, State, and local statutes. Must possess working knowledge of basic computer operation including word processing, spreadsheet and database software. Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills.

Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and occasionally required to stand; walk; and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus. This classification may include managing hazardous materials or other environmental responsibilities. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to high, precarious places. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles outside weather conditions, and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.

Job Description:
Purpose and Scope:
Inspects and monitors various hazardous operations or tasks, facilities, offices, work locations, systems and equipment and construction activity to assure compliance with applicable local, state and federal safety regulations. Advises management of appropriate safety criteria for the conduct of safe operations.

Essential Responsibilities:
1. Conducts regular safety inspections in all work locations.
2. Inspects shop arrangements, machines, tools, equipment, structures, facilities, etc., for safety hazards.
3. Recommends corrective action for safety discrepancies and follows up through line management.
4. Monitors activities for compliance with company, local, state and federal safety standards, codes, regulations/practices.
5. Investigates accidents to determine their cause, recommends corrective action to eliminate future similar accidents and prepares reports.
6. Checks for the proper use of safety equipment such as: safety glasses, goggles, respirators and other protective clothing/equipment.
7. Checks for compliance with safe loads and material handling requirements.
8. Develops and prepares reports as required.
9. Assists in the preparation, development and revision of safety procedures.
10. Participates in safety committee meetings as required.
11. Provides surveillance of hazardous operations or tests as required by established procedures, manuals, instructions or special requirements.
12. Familiarizes the organizations with the requirements for safety inspections, accident and incident investigations and the goals and objectives of the safety program.
13. Monitors the activities of contractor elements to ensure their safety programs are in compliance with KSC and OSHA directives.
14. Maintain logs and records, as required.
15. Must maintain security clearance, area permit(s), licenses, certifications, etc. required for performance of assigned tasks.
16. Performs other related and/or associated duties as required.
