The National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) at Michigan State University (MSU) is a world-leading laboratory for rare isotope research and nuclear science education. The NSCL Software development group is pleased to offer a position as a Continuing Appointment (CA) Physicist who will develop software in support of the NSCL experimental physics program and FRIB software as well.  The successful candidate will be a self-starter with good communication skills and knowledge of nuclear physics that can establish close working relationships with a number of experimental groups.

The successful candidate will work with the research staff of NSCL to assess and meet the need for software support in data acquisition and analysis. While the initial duties will be to provide software support and development for the ongoing research program at the NSCL, as FRIB is constructed the selected candidate will also be expected to play a key role in the discussions that lead to the design of a data acquisition system for FRIB and, eventually, the design and implementation of that system.

Qualifications

Required

·         Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Physics with a specialization in Nuclear or High Energy experimental physics preferred

·         Two or more years software development in any of the programming languages: C, C++, Java

·         One or more years writing and maintaining software in support of a research laboratory environment

Desired

·         Two or more years using Root either to analyze nuclear physics data or to build frameworks for the analysis of specific experimental data

·         One or more years software development that involves interfacing with hardware including:

-          Device register programming

-          Interaction with USB devices via e.g. libusb

·         Experienced writing distributed software especially in the context of data acquisition and online-analysis

·         One or more years experience with tailoring EPICS for use as a slow controls system for an experimental device
