Roles and Responsibilities

The Scientist, Medicinal Chemistry, will:

·        Initiate, direct, and execute all OMML pre-clinical scientific research and/or development strategies in an oncology field

·        Investigate the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products and problems

·        Plan and execute laboratory research

·        Maintain knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories

·        Make major contributions to scientific literature and conferences

·        Interface with various departments and serve as internal consultant

·        Act as spokesperson on corporate research and development and advise top management

·        Participate in development of patent applications

When involved in an anti-cancer drug discovery project, the Scientist, Medicinal Chemistry,

·        Contribute to the development and enablement of a coherent synthesis strategy for oncology drug discovery project(s)

·        Understand the goal and strategy of the project and, as part of a synthesis team, positively and proactively influence and reduce to practice through the development of innovative and practical chemistry

·        Design, synthesis, purification and characterization of biologically-active organic small molecules as development candidate for the drug discovery programs

·        Develop and enable versatile and modular synthetic routes compatible with rapid analog synthesis. Validation of routes through reduction to practice

·        Develop scalable routes of preclinical drug candidates

·        Maintain a detailed scientific notebook, analytical data and other scientific information

·        Prepare reports and write up experimental to support patent filing

·        Present data and progress internally and externally when necessary

·        Maintain a clean and safe laboratory environment; perform routine maintenance on laboratory instruments such as HPLC and vacuum pumps

·        Publish and present research internally and externally to Otsuka

·        Take personal responsibility for individual and co-worker safety and strictly adhere to all safety procedures and policies

·        Build effective partnerships with other lines, in particular analytical, technology, pharmaceutical sciences and process chemistry groups in Otsuka Japan.

Knowledge, Skills, Competencies, Education, and Experience Required:

·        Ph.D. in a scientific discipline, and a minimum of 5+ years of demonstrated experience in the pharmaceutical industry

·        Expertise in synthetic organic chemistry methodologies, transformations and mechanisms

·        Strong knowledge of techniques related to purification and characterization of organic compounds

·        Excellent written and oral communication skills; enthusiasm, self-motivation, strong interpersonal skill, able to interact effectively within a multidisciplinary team

Preferred:

·       1-2 years of relevant post-doctoral experience is preferred

·        Practical experience of Structure or Ligand Based Drug Design and in silico screening with operating modeling soft.

·        Previous experience in mentoring and development of junior scientists or students is a plus.
