HERE ARE SOME IDEAS TO SHARE AT YOUR NEXT STAFF MEETING!SHARE THESE RESEARCH BASED STRATEGIES WITH YOUR STAFF !

 

We all know when we want to teach something well, we have to teach and reteach that concept, right?  We don't just discuss the strategy once, post it on the wall and leave it at that. Then, why do we do it when teaching behaviors?  For some of our students, school is the only place they get to learn respectful behavior. 

 

This learning will help them throughout their lives, so do it really well.

 

We need to teach students how we expect them to behave in our classroom, systematically and explicitly. It could be raising their hand, listening, or sharpening their pencil. Here are three simple tips for teaching to expectations.

 

1. Ask students what behaviors they believe a productive classroom should enjoy.

2. Model the right way, the wrong way and the 'almost but not quite' way.

3. Review this expected behavior quickly and often, asking students to demonstrate.

 

Behavior is like any other skill, it needs to be reinforced. 

Multi-sensory strategies address all learning styles so talk, write, act out, draw, 'sing' until they have it in the bag. Then when someone is out of line, you know they know what they SHOULD be doing.

 

 

MORE RESEARCH BASED STRATEGIES FOR YOU TO SHARE WITH YOUR STAFF

 

Do you want to know the Number One strategy successful teachers use to keep their classrooms calm?

 

Unconditional Positive Regard (UPR)

 

Great teachers love their students... or like them a lot, anyway :).  Research tells us those students who know their teachers value them as a human being work harder and challenge less!

 

Remember what Madeline Hunter told us:  "Kids don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care." (I wish I had said that first!)

 

And it's not enough to care, you have to SHOW you care.

 

"How was your weekend?"  or

"What's your favorite music?" or

"Great job in the game last night."

 

Statements like those above signal an interest in the human “being” over the human “doing” (math, science, etc.). Get to know your students, their interests, their families, their concerns.  Conversations like this allow students to feel your care and get to know you.  For some of them, you are the most caring person in their lives.

 

 

EVEN MORE RESEARCH BASED STRATEGIES FOR YOU TO SHARE WITH YOUR STAFF

 

Remember, when a student tries to challenge your credibility or push your buttons with comments like... "This sucks!"  "I'm so bored."  "Mr. Smith doesn't do it that way."

 

..... you can refuse to take the debate “bait.” 

 

Respond with DIFFUSERS like:  "Nevertheless." or  "I'm sorry" or "Probably so" or "I understand.”

 

These diffusers elegantly remove you from center stage and the challenge and demonstrate to the student that you don’t argue – you TEACH!  Diffusers communicate two things:  1) I hear you (empathy) and also,  2) So what!  I keep teaching. *Hint:  Diffusers are NEVER said condescendingly, but always in a matter-of-fact tone. 

 

Use diffusers and POLITELY DISRUPT THE DISRUPTER…AND KEEP TEACHING!

 

You feel calmer, you nip the conflict in the bud, and you don't waste precious teaching time on irrelevancies.
