Senior Banker, Head of Kazakhstan and Central Asia Agribusiness
Role Overview
The Senior Banker will lead, coordinate and supervise transactions and various activities in the Agribusiness Sector in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Mongolia. The Senior Banker will work, in close cooperation with the Agribusiness Team Director based in London and the Country Team Directors/ Heads of Offices as well as with the Early Transition Countries hub in Istanbul to help ensure that the Bank meets its objectives and targets in the Agribusiness sector of these countries.
This will include playing a leading role in establishing high level sector contacts and business development; origination of new bankable leads and execution of existing complex transactions using the full range of financing structures and instruments available to the Bank; providing support to the Portfolio Manager, by coordinating monitoring and management of loans and investments undertaken by Agribusiness and Country Team bankers in the region; advise and supervise the bankers in project structuring, with special emphasis on transition challenges, impact and rating.
The Senior Banker will be based in Istanbul and will have a matrix reporting line to the Agribusiness Director and the Country Directors for Kazakhstan and Central Asia.

Responsibilities and Deliverables
- Originate and execute new transactions and existing projects, proactively engage in the oversight of these projects across the region.
- Actively develop and manage relationships with clients, private investors, operators and local, regional and central/federal government authorities, as well as with senior officials of national and multi-lateral institutions. Represent the Bank at relevant conferences and assume functions such as board and supervisory board memberships on investee companies' boards.
- Liaise with the Directors of country teams and Heads of Resident Offices in Agribusiness project development and implementation, ensuring an optimal use of Bank's resources, and contribute to the preparation of country strategies.
- Help ensure that quality of debt and equity transactions' structuring and implementation, is consistent with the Bank's strategy and standards.
- Provide on the job support/coaching/supervision of local professionals in project screening, due diligence, modelling and monitoring. As and when required, actively participate in the project preparation and approval process.
- In close coordination with the Sector and Country Directors as well as with other Agribusiness Regional Heads, manage a team of bankers fully or partially dedicated to the region. This will include responsibility for the appraisal process, regular performance review and ensuring strong motivation, dedication to the sector and good cooperation within the Agribusiness Team and with other teams in the Bank.
- When necessary, help in the recruitment of new bankers by leading searches and interview processes and making recommendations.
- Review project documentation for submission to, and approval by, the Bank's Operations Committee and the Board. Ensure appropriate quality and thoroughness of inter-departmental consultation on such projects prior to the Committee and Board review.
- Liaise and work with other departments, coordinating their involvement in the project as required.
- Work with the Agribusiness Portfolio Manager and team management to help manage the existing portfolio of loans and investments to build and protect revenue-earning assets. Actively participate in the monitoring of investments including preparation or, if required, review of regular monitoring reports, managing client relationships, recommendation on disbursements, waivers etc. and resolve any issues.
Essential Skills, Experience Qualifications
- Good relevant degree from a leading university in the country of education (e.g. business administration, economics, finance).
- Minimum of 10+ years of relevant and commercial work experience (e.g. banking, finance, project finance), gained from a major commercial/investment bank, equity fund, advisory services or corporate finance firm.
- Ability to manage and drive through transactions to their conclusion, demonstrable track record of project delivery.
- Recognised and proven execution and structuring skills in private sector deals: corporate and project financing (involving loan, equity or quasi equity financing).
- Strong business development, negotiation and marketing skills coupled with excellent communication, interpersonal and leadership skills.
- Advanced understanding of investment and financial analysis and their application in investment decisions and transaction structuring, strong credit background.
- Sound decision making and problem resolution skills.
- Computer literacy, excellent spreadsheet skills.
- Very good written and oral communication skills in English, knowledge of Turkish and Russian will be a plus.
- Work experience and knowledge of the region.
