 Auckland Council is one of the largest in the South Pacific and our business is to help achieve the Mayor's vision of making Auckland the most liveable city in the world. The Chief Economist unit represents the council's core technical economic expertise. This unit sources, analyses, interprets and builds upon economic research to provide a robust evidence base for council's activity in the economic development area.

The Senior Economist/Economist is a key role within the Economic Development team, with the primary focus to support the Chief Economist through the provision of high quality economic analysis and research. This is a unique and a rare opportunity to work on large scale, high profile policies and projects that impact the lives of Aucklanders. This role gives you the opportunity to play a lead role in assessing projects in terms of economic impacts and identifying new ideas and opinions within the field of economic research. You will work and operate at a senior level within Council, partnering with Senior Managers and key stakeholders such as Government departments and the Mayoral Office.

There is the requirement to coordinate and contribute to the Chief Economist's publications, providing economic updates, interpreting forecasts and models of the New Zealand and Auckland economy. You will be comfortable presenting to key senior stakeholders and able to demonstrate a thorough knowledge of economic models and econometric research techniques. Database management will form part of your decision-making toolset.

As an individual, you will bring strong analytical skills and an understanding of the Auckland and New Zealand economies and their global impacts. Proven capability in report writing to a political audience as well as the ability to explain and present complex issues will be a regular component of this role. High levels of communication and relationship skills coupled with the ability to work unsupervised with a strong time management discipline is essential.
