Senior Engineer
The Senior Engineer - Process (Byproducts Area) ensures that plant performance is optimized with regard to throughput, availability, recoveries, and product quality, particularly (but not limited to) in the areas of Acid Plant, Hydromet and Power House Operations. This role will ensure that risks are identified and addressed, and that opportunities are incorporated into operations and designs. This role will ensure that all programs, improvements, and reporting is conducted in accordance with Rio Tinto HSEQ Standards and analyze plant data to troubleshoot problems, and build collaborative relationships with plant personnel.
ACCONTABILITIES:
- Ensure Rio Tinto HSEQ Standards are strictly adhered to, and continuously promote safety awareness within the Smelter Technical, Operations and Maintenance groups; active participation in Accident Review Panel and other incident investigations
- Supervise and provide leadership and mentoring to junior Engineers in the By-Products areas of the plant; manage their daily workflow around the plant to ensure high standard of routine process review and effective troubleshooting is maintained; strengthen the knowledge and competency of new graduate engineers in the technical team
- Communicate operating standards to salaried and hourly employees on production, maintenance, cost, and HSEQ issues; assist in upgrading general technical awareness of By-Products area process development activities
- Mentor Control Room Specialists, Operation Supervisors and Operators as directed by the business; coordinate with operations superintendents to ensure asset availability and provide daily guidance of process control and optimization
- Monitor and report on process trends and key performance indicators to ensure optimum operation of the By-Products area of the plant
- Complete operational improvement projects with respect to improving efficiencies or process control as directed by the Operations Manager and/or Technical Manager
- Coordinate scheduled plant shutdowns with internal groups (different operational groups and maintenance groups) and external groups (refinery, chemical suppliers etc.)
- Assist with engineering projects and installation and training of new equipment
- Manage commissioning activities of new plant facilities and insure conformity to specification; oversee completion of multi-discipline division of work (scheduling, designing and planning) related to pre-commissioning or commissioning on projects
- Ensure plant is operating within environmental permits (land, water, air)
- Provide support to By-products Operations management, including VSA support for Area Supervisors; execution of weekly and monthly production and maintenance plans; routine budgeting and quarterly forecasts for capital, OPEX and production; prioritizing project work, meeting area and Smelter wide HSE targets
- Review/document standard operating and management of change procedures, engineering drawings, specifications, and production reports
- Lead and contribute to setting technical strategy and operational processes within By-Products area
- Continuously evaluate and keep abreast of new technologies for improving plant performance and efficiency, and managing the implementation of such new technologies
- Work with plant personnel and project engineers to solve instrumentation and control problems
- Assist with inventory management, quality issues, production and potential environmental impacts of operations
- Routinely meet with project and plant managers, internal and external engineers, plant analysts and procurement personnel to maintain collaboration and facilitate data gathering and procurement processes; present to senior management with specific updates
- External coordination with consultants, laboratories, contractors and engineering firms for management and direction of their services
- Internal coordination with plant technical and operational personnel in all areas of KUCC for facilitation of data transfer and collaboration
- Interaction with KUC Refinery, Engineering Services, Rio Tinto Technology Innovation and Procurement groups for technical support and purchasing requirements
- Participate in plant initiatives to ensure cost, production, maintenance, and HSEQ objectives are met
- Work with plant personnel and project engineers to solve instrumentation and control problems
EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS
- B. S. Degree in Metallurgical or Chemical Engineering or related field. Master's degree may be substituted for some of the experience requirement
- Strong, demonstrated commitment to HSEQ
- Excellent communication skills (oral, written, and presentation)
- Must demonstrate participative problem solving, project implementation and continuous improvement
- Advanced computer skills in MS Word, Excel, database software such as PI, Distributed Control Systems
- Strong leadership and people skills are a must including excellent interpersonal and team facilitation skills
- Project management skills
- Advanced organizational and prioritization skills
- Must have expertise and experience with similar process plants, systems, and equipment and understand metallurgical, mass, and energy modeling
