The (Senior) Engineer, Spacecraft Subsystem (Thermal Power) is responsible for the in-orbit operations and performance monitoring of the Power and Thermal subsystems of the O3b satellite constellation.
O3b Networks is developing a MEO satellite based network to provide cost effective broadband connectivity to carriers in developing nations. A ground and space network will be deployed during 2011-12 and pre-sales of over $600M of backlog orders is already under contract. Strategic investors include: Google, HSBC, Liberty Global, Northbridge Venture Partners and SES.
O3b Networks seeks to leverage strategic relationships in order to build competitive advantage not normally available to start-up organizations. SES provides operational and satellite management expertise, satellite sales and operations expertise. Thales builds the satellites and ArianeSpace will provide launch capability. The ground network contract is currently under tender.
Responsibilities
- Have a deep understanding of the Power and Thermal subsystems, It includes solar arrays, batteries, regulation and distribution units, as well as active and passive thermal control systems, and all on-board software related to those subsystems;
- Have a good overall understanding of all other satellite subsystems;
- Maximize satellite transponders availability and longevity;
- Monitor health status and provide on-call support for satellites in operation, including recovery and follow-up of eventual spacecraft off-limit conditions, anomalies and service interruptions;
- Report on Constellation Power/Thermal subsystem performances and notify issues per escalation procedures;
- Develop and/or validate nominal and contingency procedures and tools related to spacecraft operations;
- Support spacecraft operations and configuration changes;
- Develop and maintain tools for evaluating and trending spacecraft power / thermal budgets, performance and spacecraft capacity predicts;
- Support procurement activities and beginning of life in-orbit testing as required;
- Support insurance and other external requests/reporting, including forecast of spacecraft capacity.
Experience / Qualifications
- Have a master degree in engineering, with a specialization which includes electrical, thermal or mechanical systems;
- Have at least (7) 5 years of experience in satellite engineering and operations. Operational experience with LEO or MEO constellation would be an advantage;
- Have a sound theoretical knowledge, and be eager to implement it in a practical environment;
- Be able to acquire detailed technical information within pre-defined deadlines and apply it in day-to-day situations;
- Have strong analytical and problem-solving skills;
- Have strong computer software skills;
- Be able to provide on-call support, react to contingencies and cope with high stress situations;
- Be fluent in English;
- Have strong communication skills, both written and oral, and team-spirit;
- Flexibility, reliability and readiness to work without direct supervision.
