Senior Investment Accountant, Private Equity
Description:
Scope:
- Responsible for ensuring all Private Equity fund investment activity is recorded to the sub ledger and corporate ledger including contributions, distributions, valuations and foreign exchange gains and losses
- Responsible for reviewing private equity fund financial statements and ensuring all activity ties to the sub ledger
- Responsible for the review of daily cash and valuation activity across the Leveraged Buyout, Distressed, and Venture portfolios
- Responsible for determining income to recognize for the funds based on SSAP 48
- Responsible for the review of audited financial statements per fund investment to determine if assets should be admitted as well as the review of footnote disclosures to determine if there is any new information that should be reported to management regarding major changes in accounting policies or portfolio investments and/or valuations
- Responsible for the timely and accurate completion of monthly and quarterly investment reporting
- Responsible for the timely and accurate completion and submission of investment related Statutory Schedules and Footnotes including Schedule BA and Asset Valuation Reserve schedules and determination
- Responsible for the preparation and review of the footnote disclosure for unfunded commitments for the private equity portfolio
- Responsible for updating procedures and SOX documents
- Participate in system upgrades and business continuity exercises
- Partner across Investment Accounting Reporting, Asset Management, Risk Management, Valuation Services, Internal Audit and Compliance to ensure proper accounting treatment for new investments, changes in strategy or portfolios and other events that impact the Private Equity portfolio
- Assist in the SOX and TIAA internal/external audits
- Stay abreast of changes in statutory accounting guidance to ensure compliance with statutory reporting requirements for the private equity fund portfolio (LBO, Distressed and Venture portfolios)
Job Complexity:
- Ability to read, interpret and apply accounting pronouncements for the impact on recording private equity investments and related reporting and disclosure requirements
- Ability to read and analyze financial statements to determine reasons for large fluctuations and impact of new disclosures
- Provides clear and well-organized supporting documentation for transactions, footnote disclosures and audit support
- Evaluates and improves processes to enhance systems, reports and analysis to provide efficiencies to the investment reporting function
- Provides direction and support to other areas involved in the creation of footnote and rating agency requests as required
Interaction:
- Networks across investment accounting groups, middle office, and internal control groups to ensure integrity of the investment related disclosures
- Engages and participates in discussions with Senior Management, Accounting Policy, Risk Management, Compliance, Asset Management, Regulatory Reporting and Investment Accounting Reporting
- Interacts with internal and external auditors. Requires fulfilling requests for information and walking them through the transactions and investment related footnotes.
- Partner with Accounting Policy to keep abreast of changes in regulatory requirements
Oversight/Freedom to Act:
- Recommend and implement changes to methods of performing accounting and analysis
- Works independently
- Researches and resolves difficult reporting requirements
- Position may provide functional advice or training to less experienced staff
- Ensure adherence to schedules and achieves time sensitive deadlines
- Identifies workflow problems; recommends and implements solutions
Qualifications
Qualifications:
- 5 - 8 years of experience in investment accounting with specific emphasis in private equity
- Statutory accounting and reporting experience preferred
- BBA degree in Accounting required
- Public accounting experience preferred
- CPA preferred
- Proficient in Excel, Access and Word
- Excellent research, analytical, communication and organizational skills
