Key Responsibilities

Essential

1.            Plans, schedules, conducts, or coordinates detailed phases of the engineering work in a part of a major project or in a total project of moderate scope.  Performs work which involves conventional engineering practice but may include a variety of complex features such as conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials, and difficult coordination requirements.  Work requires a broad knowledge of precedents in the specialty area and a good knowledge of and practices of related specialties. 

2.            Capable of executing multiple tasks at a time.

3.            May check, approve, supervise or coordinate the work of engineers, designers, drafters, technicians, and others who assist in specific assignments.

4.            Develop project-specific specifications, evaluate proposals, and issue requisitions for  discipline-related equipment.

5.            Review vendor approval drawings for compliance with contract requirements.

6.            Implement vendor information into specific discipline design document.

7.            Perform all work as required to produce complete design package per discipline-specific area of responsibility for well-defined power plant including:  (1) scheduling of design document issuance and monitoring of same on time; (2) scheduling time of self and other personnel effectively to maximize product.  Supply input to estimate staffing requirements.  Work with both permanent and contract staff; (3) effectively supervise (excluding personnel areas) two to three engineers, designers or drafters on a daily basis; (4) monitor and comply (as close as possible) with engineering and project budgets; (4) maintain documents used to indicate engineering progress updates, i.e., drawing requests and manhour reports as completed.  Work with Department Manager, Project Engineer and others to accomplish.  Work for or as lead discipline Engineer on a simple project.

8.            Provide training to Engineers, Designers and Drafters as required.

9.            Provide Project Management/Project Engineering duties to small, less complex projects as needed.

10.         Assist Applications department with the development of complex project scope of supply documents, estimates and proposals.

11.         Provide input to improve cost effectiveness in discipline, i.e., change in heat balance by changing cycle; use different instrument or diagram configuration blocks.

12.         Assists with business development activities.

13.         Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills/Experience/Training Required:

Bachelor’s Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited curriculum, or equivalent, plus appropriate continuing education with 10 to 15 years of power plant, industrial, operations, start-up, or construction engineering experience.  2 to 4 years power plant design experience or equivalent required.  All basic skills of Engineer with complete design understanding of power plant equipment, cycles, operations, start-up and construction requirements.  Outstanding expertise in one area may offset others.  Strong knowledge of codes associated with their particular discipline.

Licenses and Certifications:

 

Professional Engineering license recommended or candidate shall be capable of being licensed and shall be actively pursuing licensure.

Working Conditions/Physical Demands:

 

The duties and responsibilities are generally performed in an office environment.  The position generally involves continuous sitting; frequent standing; frequent walking; light to moderate lifting; light carrying; frequent bending and reaching; keyboarding and telephone operation.

 

The environmental conditions generally include ambient inside temperature, lighting and noise levels.  Conditions may also include extended periods of travel by automobile and/or airplane transport.  May require an irregular work schedule and overtime hours.

 

Specific physical conditions require frequent work on CRT work stations and/or twisting; kneeling; walking; balancing; keyboarding; telephone operation at drafting board.
