The mission of North American Rolled Products is to be the world s leading supplier of aluminum sheet and plate products. To achieve this goal, Davenport Works manufacturing processes need to be technologically sustainable, cost effective, and able to be continually improved. Engineering s principal challenge is to provide safe, reliable, maintainable and capable equipment and processes to meet these goals. The Senior Mechanical Engineer is responsible (both individually and in teams) for the mechanical engineering of one or more pieces of equipment and/or facilities within Davenport Works. The Senior Mechanical Engineer's principal emphasis is on supporting Davenport Works objectives of sustaining operations, optimizing processes or equipment, and implementation of capital improvements or additions. These include: - taking a leading role in defining, analyzing, proposing and implementing solutions to technical problems relating to production facilities - obtaining funds for assigned projects by accurately preparing cost estimates, evaluating economics, local and corporate requests for authorization, and requests for major project funds with minimum direction - planning projects and coordinating installation with plant maintenance and production forces and outside contractors - developing safe, practical equipment designs and specifications - obtaining material by evaluating quotations, writing requisitions and coordinating timely delivery to meet installation target dates - providing technical supervision of installations and start-up of new or revised equipment - providing thorough project follow-up, including equipment data sheets, operating and maintenance instructions, establishment of spare parts, preventive maintenance schedules and safety inspections - acting as project engineer in coordinating all phases of a major project - taking a major role in training less experienced engineers and coordinating the work of engineering assistants - maintaining effective communications with production, maintenance, purchasing, and other staff groups that are involved with assignments - maintaining broad, in-depth knowledge of processes and equipment, and ascertain if inefficient, abusive, or unsafe practices exist - maintaining pertinent equipment records on a continuing basis for area of responsibility The Senior Mechanical Engineer's principal challenge is the utilization of his/her expertise and experience in managing a program designed to provide improved production equipment in a timely and economical manner. Basic Qualifications - BS degree in Mechanical Engineering and five years of mechanical engineering experience within a manufacturing environment OR BS degree in another engineering discipline with 10 years of mechanical engineering experience within a manufacturing enviroment. - Experience leading, managing, and executing mechanical projects, including design, installation, and commissioning. - Strong problem solving skills, using both theoretical and practical methods to achieve improvements or correct identified problems. - Ability to oversee the activities of craft persons involved in the implementation of engineered solutions. In this role, be able to initiate and maintain an on-going dialog with installers to identify issues, clarify requirements, and facilitate use of safe work practices. - Strong oral and written communications, and a desire to coordinate and/or lead the activities of other members of a team. - Flexibility to grow with the organization as it evolves to create more efficient, higher functioning teams and systems. - Work effectively in a high performance team environment and with cross functional teams. Preferred Qualifications - Experience with combustion systems, large rolling mill mechanical systems, or work in light metals industry. - Experience working in a union environment.
