Introduction

The Company manufactures and supplies an extensive range of Prepared Microbiological Culture Media to the pharmaceutical industry, food industry and health care markets. Cherwell also supplies and services specialist environmental air monitoring equipment and supplies biological indicators and data logging equipment, primarily in to the same markets.
Cherwell operates an ISO9001 registered Quality Management System and is regularly audited by customers from the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries.
Description of Job
QC Microbiology is responsible for the routine testing of all prepared media manufactured by Cherwell Laboratories Production team. Routine testing of the Redipor® product range includes sterility checks, pH testing and growth promotion testing on finished product.
The production of poured plates takes place within a Clean Room environment which is strictly controlled. This area is routinely monitored for bacterial contamination using settle plates, active air samples and surface contact plates.
The QC Laboratory Senior Technician’s responsibilities will include all routine testing activities, including:
Ÿ Preparation of test sheets and routine testing of batches of media for pH, sterility and growth promotion
Ÿ Initial review of test data for completeness and accuracy, including checking calculations, average results and reference sheets
Ÿ Assistance in maintaining the culture collection and creating serial dilutions of control organisms
Ÿ Performing water testing, including TVC and conductivity tests and recording/incubating environmental monitoring samples
Ÿ Assistance with trials and shelf life studies and preparation of shelf life reports for review by supervisor/manager
Ÿ Review of laboratory cleaning records and equipment calibration
Requirements Qualifications
Ideally we are looking for an applicant who can:
Ÿ Demonstrate an accurate and meticulous work ethic - careful completion of documentation is vital to the quality control process
Ÿ Be efficient and dextrous with your practical skills - accurate and consistent inoculation of plates is of paramount importance
Ÿ Bring experience from other positions - helping in suggesting new methods/ideas
Ÿ Work to tight deadlines - prioritise effectively whilst maintaining high standards at all times
Ÿ Be a team player, flexible and conscientious - everyone is encouraged to contribute
The successful candidate will require
Ÿ Previous experience - practical experience in a Microbiology Laboratory
Ÿ Biological Sciences - a qualification in one of the sciences would be advantageous
Ÿ Numeracy skills - must be able to demonstrate the ability to handle data including fractions and decimal dilutions
Ÿ Computer skills – knowledge of Windows and basic computing
Ÿ Fundamentals - GCSE, or equivalent, in English, Maths and a Science subject
Hours of Work
This is a permanent full time salaried position based on 5 days per week, ideally Sunday to Thursday, 37½ hours per week. Alternative hours, including part time may be considered. Flexibility to accommodate busier times of the week and help cover holidays and weekends would be advantageous. Overtime rates would apply.
Salary Terms of Employment
Details of the Rates of pay will be discussed at interview. Holiday entitlement is based on 20 days per calendar year plus Bank holidays. Sick pay and other terms will also be clarified at interview.
