The Senior Scientist will be responsible for planning and executing research and development projects leading to Laboratory Developed Tests in a regulated environment. The ideal candidate will apply bioinformatics, biochemistry, molecular biology, data analysis, software, and instrumentation methods for nucleic acid detection assays using, real-time PCR, “next-generation sequencing” and other technologies. The Sr. Scientist will serve as a technical expert for the RD department as well as cross functional project teams.
Responsibilities:
· Retrieve and annotate genomic/genetic data, design assays, develop/run biochemistry, analyze and summarize data for qualitative and quantitative applications such as genotyping, gene expression, copy number variation, mutation profiling, etc
· Work on biochemical optimization for a broad scope of enzymatic manipulations as they relate to nucleic acids
· Perform extensive data analysis and graphical representations of findings using appropriate software such as Minitab, Excel, JMP and R
· Create appropriate model systems and samples for proof-of-concept and validation studies
· Develop and enhance reaction processes and detection performance for nucleic acids
· Develop and enhance liquid handling for various biochemistries
· Present scientific accomplishments and results to the RD project teams and at meetings within the organization
· Create design input requirements for assays
· Participate and present findings at conferences
· Publish scientifically relevant data in peer reviewed journals and participate in development of patent applications, if applicable
Requirements:
· PhD in Molecular Biology/Biochemistry/Genetics or related field
· 5+ years experience in an applied research and/or development environment (Postdoctoral work may serve as experience) or M.Sc. in Molecular Biology/Biochemistry with 8+ years of relevant experience
· Previous experience with the management and training of scientific staff
· Expertise in genomics/genetics with regards to sequence manipulation, assay design and assay performance optimization
· Hands-on experience with real-time PCR, sequencing technologies, especially next-generation sequencing is desirable
· Experience with different automated liquid handling solutions, including designing, testing and implementing new methods
· Experience with assay/test development/submission and documentation for 510k or IVD is a plus
· Strong background in experimental design, using DOE for assay optimization
· Strong background in data analysis using statistical software packages like JMP or Minitab, R experience is highly preferred
