Senior Software Engineer | Team Lead at Wikimedia Foundation (San Francisco, CA) (allows remote)
Job Description
We are looking for a solid developer that knows or can quickly learn about multimedia infrastructure, so experience developing and/or deploying web-based multimedia applications is a big plus. In addition to our large PHP code base, we have some Bash and Python scripts, and Puppet configuration. Familiarity with (and contribution to) open source projects and/or working with the Wikipedia communtiy will be helpful.
Summary
We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to lead our new Multimedia team. You will help design and develop our next generation of media handling features to Wikipedia and related websites. We are looking for someone that is excited about the challenge of creating practical, easy-to-use systems to improve the viewing experience and enable seamless contributions to Wikipedia and its sister projects, helping to educate millions. This is an opportunity to be a founding member of team responsible for furthering Wikimedia’s mission to bring free knowledge to every person on the planet by providing a richer, more immersive experience on our sites.

Familiarity with (and contribution to) open source projects and/or working with the Wikipedia communtiy will be helpful. This will be an opportunity to learn more (or teach us about) about distributed filesystems, as we are working with Ceph and OpenStack’s Swift.
Responsibilities
- Provide technical leadership and act as a mentor to a new team of developers
- Develop and deploy new features in our image, audio, and video uploading systems
- Optimize our media storage and management infrastructure
- Apply your experience to working on complex applications leveraging a large number of heterogeneous software components
- Deploy volunteer-written code soon after it is received, sometimes only hours after it has been written
Skills Requirements
- You have written a significant amount of code
- Extensive experience building large-scale server applications, with expert knowledge developing and debugging in Linux (LAMP) environments
- Expert at building, configuring, and evaluating highly available, large-scale distributed systems
- Well-versed in highly scalable solutions in data storage, analysis and reporting for large-scale, distributed data sets
- You have experience in PHP and ideally (including) several languages such as; Java, JavaScript, Haskell, Lisp, Python, Ruby, C++
- Have an understanding the principles of open source software development
- Recognize the importance of building a global community of supporters for Wikimedia's mission, and strive to enlist others in helping us
- BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science or Mathematics or equivalent experience
Pluses
- People who know open source and free culture, and have contributed to open source projects
- People who know what it means to be a volunteer or to coordinate the work of volunteers
- Some experience as a system administrator in a production environment is a big plus
