Senior Strategy Consultant (Oil & Gas)

Job Description Work experience (roles, sectors)

• Experience in a manager or senior manager role in consulting

• A track record in consulting but not necessarily a pure career consultant

• Potentially someone who has worked in a central strategy or performance improvement or planning team in industry

• A bias towards those with experience in oil and gas, chemicals, energy, heavy process manufacturing, maintenance and engineering

• Specific experience in oil and gas offshore operations, refineries and petrochemicals businesses extremely desirable

• Experience in business support functions such as shared services, IT, finance, procurement, HR etc also sought-after

• Has led teams, led multi-disciplinary and complex projects under difficult circumstances and has delivered substantive, measurable operational improvements in complex businessesBusiness development experience

• Desire to be involved in business development and having demonstrated entrepreneurial behaviour

• Ideal candidate would be able to operate across the full value chain of the sale - identify opportunity, shape it with client, develop proposal, commercials, scope etc and then close the deal - on opportunities circa £1m

• Others may have only supported / been involved in client pitches, bid managing sales efforts, having initial conversations with prospects (potentially supported by partners and directors) to shape ideas and opportunities

• Demonstrable ability of building client relationshipsOther requirements

• Leadership skills: ability to inspire/motivate teams, to build client relationships and to “front” a project

• Able to work alongside a client counterpart to scope, plan, mobilise and manage the progress of a project

• Capable of holding ultimate responsibility for the final output of a complex and multi-disciplinary project, including budgets, risk files and other relevant documentation

• Sufficiently mature to hold day-to-day oversight of project activities and project teams

• Good analytical problem-solvers, able to think in a structured way

• Drive and impact, good storytelling, financial acumen, attention to detail

• Strong interpersonal/social /coaching skills and team-players, right cultural fit and attitude, highly motivated

• Able to provide constructive and robust challenge to the work of colleagues to ensure the highest delivery standards

• Personable and good at striking a rapport with a variety of individuals, personality and personal commitment to be role models and ambassadors of the UK Strategy Group

• Able to use that rapport to conduct effective senior client interviews and collect insights and data as appropriate

• Strong networks

• 'Self starters' and able to work independently with little guidance to lead teams to achieve results agreed

• Desire to drive and successful track record of practice development

• Able to cope with the pace and urgency of our work

• Comfortable being away from home for long periods of time (even if this is weeks away and back at weekends)

• Written English skills need to be excellent

• Good understanding of tactical client management and escalation

• Comfortable to lead big pieces in fairly independent manner

• Sound judgement and decision making skills

• Has had good exposure to managing senior / board room clients – able to manage and secure buy-in from senior stakeholders during the project

• Has ideally worked overseas and is used to living and working in different cultures and might even have an interest in seconding to one of our global Strategy Team hubs (eg SA, AUS etc)

• Has demonstrated a sense of ownership and pride of what s/he has achieved and was part of in the past

• Willingness to play manager or even associate role on first project(s) to quickly be able to observe the Senior Manager and – once operating at SrMgr – being able to leverage associates and managers effectivelyPotential sources

• Top Tier strategy houses (McKinsey, Bain, BCG etc.) – mainly their operations side

• Operational consultancy experience such as Stroud, Newton, Hagen, Celerant and others
