Department Summary:
J.P. Morgan Worldwide Securities Services provides Custody and Accounting services to its clients. The client base is predominately Fund Managers, Superannuation Funds and Insurance Companies in Australia and New Zealand. It strives to be the preferred partner to clients offering a wide range of products, services and reporting to meet all their requirements. Tax reporting is becoming an increasingly complex and important part of client reporting as legislation changes continue to impact the underlying investors.
While the Tax Team themselves do not generally produce reporting and outputs, they are responsible for the processes and oversight of all tax-related functions within Operations including:
- Unit Registry
- Static Data
- Member Investment Choice
- Transitions
- Corporate Actions
- Fund Accounting
- Distributions
- Managed Funds
The Tax Team act as consultants to the business on client issues as they arise, change in portfolio structures, changes in legislation, projects and general operational matters. They play a vital role in setting the agenda for our business as we look to ensure we have accurate tax reporting that meets the ever changing needs of our clients.
Position Summary:
The Senior Tax Manager role involves supporting the initiatives, projects and business processes that stretch across all aspects of operations including Registry, Unit Pricing, Corporate Actions, Income, Listed and Unlisted Unit Trusts.
Working closely with others in the Tax Team, plus the various Operations departments, they will play an oversight role in BAU and process improvement initiatives.
The position requires working with Operations to ensure our product and service is of a high quality. There will be a BAU (business as usual) element as well as a project element. Specific aspects of the role include:
- Share knowledge and actively develop others in the Tax Team
- Direct staff management of a small team
- Client relationships
- Reviewing tax reporting prepared by Operations or others in the Tax team as required
- Technical input and participation in business-wide projects (eg Fund mergers)
- Technical input into business issues as they arise
- Partner with vendors to drive business outcomes for our business
- Sign-off project documentation from a tax perspective
- Actively assist in developing the Tax Policy
Key Accountabilities/Major Responsibilities:
Management and BAU
- Assist with client deliverables and be an escalation point when technical expertise is required
- All aspects of staff management for a small team including work allocation, performance reviews, one-on-ones and development planning
- Prioritise work for oneself and the team, escalating any issues well ahead of time
- Represent tax at client RFPs and due dilligence meetings as required
- Provide training and guidance to more inexperienced staff members, plus others in Operations as part of deveoping others and driving higher quality outputs
Oversight and Support
- Take an active interest in assigned Operations functions and their processes
- Ownership for assigned SOPs and accuracy, including regular reviews and training
- Strive towards best practice
- Escalation point for assigned Operations teams on tax and process issues
- Develop the tax function within Operations to ensure compliance and risk are managed
Projects
- Assist in establishing the business case and requirements for various projects
- Advise on steering committees and participate on working groups to see through the implementation of the various projects within the business
- Liase with people across the business to promote the awareness and understanding of project issues
- Offer practical, commercial recommendations for solutions to project and business problems
- Review data and reports as necessary to sign-off on project deliverables as required
Process
- Review the end-to-end and discreet processes within Operations and identify sub-standard or inefficient processes
- Scope out the work involved to remediate any sub-standard processes including consultation with the business
- Adhere to J.P. Morgan change management process and project governance for all changes
Skills
Qualifications/Experience/Knowledge:
- Strong communication skills and the ability to converse with people with varying degress of tax knowledge
- Able to build strong relationships with clients and internal stakeholders
- Good knowledge of financial markets and instruments, both domestic and global
- PC literate and understanding of Operations processes
- Demonstrate good organizational skills
- Knowledge of HiPort an advantage
- Knowledge of tax as it relates to the Funds Management Industry
- Demonstrate persistence to complete a task or project
- Able to manage all stakeholders both internal and external
- Minimum 8 years experience within Financial Services
Formal Qualifications:
- Tertiary degree, Masters of Tax, CPA or ACA
