The Senior Unix Administrator performs a wide variety of tasks in software/hardware maintenance and operational support of Solaris and Linux based systems. They are responsible for maintaining all hosted customer environments.
These responsibilities include maintaining all Solaris-10 Operating Systems, Linux Operating Systems, hardware, system security, ftp and sftp servers, EMC (CLARiiON and Symmetrix) storage, Veritas HA Software and a disaster recovery site for emergency fail-over of all client applications.
The Senior Unix Administrator recommends and implements policies and standards, ensuring adherence to security procedures.
Job Functions
- Planning, installation, configuration, monitoring and deployment of Unix Servers.
- Analyze and resolve problems with Server hardware setup, tuning and troubleshooting all aspects of the Sun Solaris Operating System (Solaris 10) and Linux (OEL-Oracle Enterprise Linux).
- Evaluating and applying packages and security patches on Solaris and Linux Servers.
- Maintaining system backups using Veritas NetBackup.
- Developing new Unix scripts to support task automation and monitoring activities.
- Supporting and Troubleshooting Solaris networking services and protocols such as TCP/IP, NIS, DNS, NFS, DHCP/BOOTP, FTP, SSH, Kerberos, SMTP, Sendmail and LDAP.
- Installation, support and troubleshooting of Veritas high availability products, specifically VCS, Veritas Clustering Server, Veritas Volume Manager, Veritas File System.
- Supporting SAN Storage solutions from EMC (CLARiiON and Symmetrix).
- Maintenance of customer Weblogic environments.
- Creating detailed How To and Best Practices guides.
- Perform disaster recovery testing.
- Conduct ongoing security risk assessments including the monitoring, investigation and reporting of security and access violations.
- Perform system wide updates, server installations and general maintenance during monthly maintenance windows.
- Ensure licensing compliance for software assurance across the organization.
- Maintain current knowledge with respect to relevant state-of-the-art technology, equipment and systems.
- Reporting on system availability, performance and security compliance.
- Initiate new responsibilities and help to plan for the future growth.
- Establish and implement policies, procedures and standards, ensuring conformance with information systems and objectives.
- Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
- Respond within defined SLA metrics to issues logged in the company ticketing system.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- 5+ years of experience as a Sun Solaris Administrator or Linux system Administrator.
- Unix System Administration Certification is a plus.
- Strong operating system and network knowledge in order to carry out assigned administrative tasks with the need for limited supervision.
- Experience with PeopleSoft Applications is a plus.
- Basic working knowledge of Windows.
- Working knowledge of web application security, understanding of vulnerabilities and counter measures.
- Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities, self-direction.
