Description of position
This is a programmer / analyst position within the Solution Support – Costco Applications team. This is a level 2 and 3 support organization where the primary responsibility of the team is to support all in house, custom developed programs. The programs are primarily written in the RPG programming language on IBM i5 systems, though over time Costco is transitioning to a SOA development model on an AIX platform and will use the java programming language.
Tasks and responsibilities
- Resolve support incidents to business satisfaction, as assigned or self-assigned.
- Analyze customer reported problems to determine the affected business service, and identify who needs to be involved for problem resolution.
- Analyze programs and applications to determine how they function in order to integrate modifications, enhancements or bug fixes.
- Create or modify programs with or without written program specifications, consistent with department procedures, standards and methodologies.
- Create test scripts and executing adequate unit and system testing while providing necessary test documentation
- Provide mentoring and support to area team members.
- Work on issues from any Application area as required.
Required skills, abilities, and certifications
- Demonstrates initiative, tenacity and analytical skills in problem solving and root cause analysis.
- A minimum of 3 years’ experience designing, developing, and testing applications.
- Strong capabilities in writing and maintaining interactive and batch programs in RPGLE, RPG with embedded SQL, SQL and CL on the IBM i5 platform.
- Will need to be willing to learn SOA concepts, object oriented / web development, and the java programming language.
- Ability to effectively perform unit and system testing of applications, to include as necessary, the creation and execution of test scripts.
- Strong work ethic, self-initiative, and positive attitude.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and with audiences of different backgrounds (technical versus non-technical, team members, department management, etc.)
- Proven ability to follow priorities and timelines.
- Must be available to work nights and weekends, and perform on-call support as scheduled and as needed.
Recommended skills, abilities, and certifications
- Capabilities in some of the following would be a plus: Object oriented programming – Java in particular, Object Oriented Design, Web-based development, HTML, Java Script, and WebSphere. A mix of RPG and Java skills would be ideal.
- Experience with multiple hardware platforms and O/S.
- Knowledgeable on SOA concepts.
- Knowledgeable about MQ, ETL, data queues, FTP, and other middleware and communication technologies.
- Previous experience developing custom interfaces to package solutions.
- Ability to work independently, take ownership of assigned work, and be accountable for results.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
