Hays Healthcare are currently working with an NHS Trust in the East Midlands region of the UK that is looking to recruit Specialty Doctors in Accident Emergency.

This is a medium-sized district general hospital that provides a wide range of services to about 300,000 people in North Northamptonshire.   

The hospital has served its local community since 1897. It became an NHS Trust in 1994 and a Foundation Trust in November 2008.

The Trust's goal is to provide the highest standards of care for all of its patients and to fully support carers and visitors. 
It has developed many state-of-the-art facilities run by highly qualified staff including:

An £18m short-stay surgery Centre – The Treatment Centre – which enables the majority of operations to be done with stays of less than 48 hours  

A £4.7m Cardiac Centre providing heart-related treatments closer to people’s homes

The Trust also has :-

§     600 inpatient and day case beds
§     A modern AE department
§     A large maternity wing
§     17 operating theatres
§     An intensive care unit
§     Skin care centre – the Jubilee Wing
§     Cancer care wing – the Centenary Wing
§     Special care baby unit
§ Excellent diagnostic facilities e.g. CT and MRI scanners.

The Trust employs more than 3,200 staff and considers them its greatest asset.

The Department sees approx 85,000 patients per year.  There are separate areas for resuscitation, major and minors and a children's areas.

A business case has been approved and will allow the Trust to expand the service by improvements to the estate, additional senior staff and advanced equipment. They are developing a senior led service and are working closely with other hospital departments to facilitate seamless and high quality advanced care.

The Trust  operates a dynamic, rapid assessment and treatment system to facilitate senior-led decision making and to provide a useful teaching environment for junior medical staff. This approach has helped them improve the quality of care and achieve their performance targets.

The Trust is working on further developing the service. They have introduced a clinical governance structure and promote research and audit activity. The Trust is integrating with the regional trauma network and the hospital provides a 24/7 Regional Emergency Service for myocardial infarctions.

Role of  the Specialty Doctor :-

* The Specialty Doctor will be required to assist in the day to day running of the department as directed by the Clinical Director

* The Specialty Doctor and Senior Trust Grade doctors, together with the SHOs and Trust Grade doctors are responsible for the initial assessment, management and treatment of all patients presenting to the Emergency Department. 

*  The Specialty Doctor will mainly be working on the shop floor seeing patients and supervising the junior staff in one of the treatment streams.

*  Additional time for special interests will be provided for those interested in developing areas of the service. 

*  The Specialty Doctor review x-ray reports and arrange follow up for missed fractures. 

*  Communication and liaison with other hospitals and specialist units. 

*  The Specialty Doctor will take an active role in the minor injuries assessment and treatment area, helping and guiding the emergency nurse practitioners. 

*  The Specialty Doctor will be encouraged to participate in teaching and training programmes for both the junior doctors, nursing staff and ambulance personnel. 

*  The Specialty Doctor will be involved in the Trauma Team and the resuscitation of cardiac arrests within the department.  

*  There are three soft tissue clinics per week which are Consultant led.  The Specialty Doctor and Senior Trust Grade doctors are asked to run these clinics when the Consultant is absent. 

*  The Specialty Doctors are required to familiarise themselves with the departmental clinical guidelines and protocols. 

*  The Senior Grade doctors will be encouraged to take part in clinical audit and keep themselves up to date with CPD requirements.  Study leave will be encouraged in accordance with Trust guidelines.*  The post holder undertakes exceptionally, to perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.

Applicants must have a minimum of 3 years post-graduate experience in AE/Emergency Medicine and must also have (or be eligible for) full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and must have a good command of English in order to communicate fluently with patients and colleagues alike.
