Position Overview:

Plan, direct, and execute engineering projects related to manufacturing methods, processes, work measurement, cost estimating, facilities, systems, and equipment using knowledge of existing capabilities, current technology and new technology.  Implements the manufacture of new products or product lines with the emphasis on integrating the most efficient process and repeatable design. Responsible for the development of safe, efficient, and cost-effective manufacturing processes and procedures. Interfaces with manufacturing personnel to improve existing processes, increase safety and resolve any ergonomic concerns. Provides technical support to shop operations in the area of equipment, layout, tools, fixtures, and machines to ensure low-cost and high-quality products.  Focuses on the continuous improvement efforts, utilizing MVP tools (lean and six-sigma) to increase customer service and productivity, and decrease lead times, scrap and inventory for various product lines. 

 

Job Requirements:

1.        Establish the technical manufacturing processes, methods, and procedures in assigned area of responsibility. Evaluate and justify machines and equipment, and coordinate installation to achieve efficient manufacturing operation.  Develop appropriate routings, procedures, and manufacturing instructions.

2.        Determine efficient and understandable work methods, and incorporate improvements for manufacturing.  Review work practices for ergonomic and safety hazards, and devise appropriate corrective actions. 

3.        Responsible for immediate resolution of shop and manufacturing problems in assigned areas.  Review and evaluate factors relating to parts, material, and/or product nonconformance.  Provide technical judgment on usability or develop rework processing requirements and procedures.

4.        Design concept and develop application requirements for tooling and fixtures utilized in manufacturing.  Coordinate and approve all tooling implementation to assure compliance to product specifications.

5.        Review and evaluate new and changed parts and products for manufacturability.  Develop cost and labor estimates and, if required, participate in design review and evaluation. 

6.        Plan and implement adequate manufacturing methods, tooling, equipment, work center layouts, etc., for new products and parts in conjunction with their release and implementation.

7.        Assist in the justification, planning, and execution of long-term work center, department, or facility modifications.

8.        Develop and determine accurate labor rates using industry-wide accepted standard work measurement techniques.

9.        Coordinate the above activities with appropriate manufacturing, purchasing, engineering, and production control personnel in a timely and professional manner, communicated clearly with concise and factual data.

10.     Utilize MVP tools (lean manufacturing and six-sigma) and lead kaizen events to increase customer service and productivity, and decrease lead times, scrap and inventory for various product lines. 

11.     Address any safety concerns and strive to eliminate any potential environmental, safety and ergonomic issues with the manufacturing processes.

12.     Keep informed of new technology, equipment, or processes that have application to transformer products.  Develop proposals to incorporate new technology where appropriate. 

Job Requirements:

Bachelor of Science in engineering or related field.  5+ years of progressive experience in all phases of manufacturing engineering.  Experience with plastic and/or rubber molding processes, lean manufacturing and/or six sigma tools preferred. Above average computer skills to enable incumbent to utilize database, spreadsheet, word processing, and Computer Aided Drafting programs.  Knowledge of business systems (SAP) and Microsoft Office products; project management skills.  Good verbal and written communications skills.

 

Additional Qualifications:

Prepares capital expenditure requests (AFEs), frequent interaction with outside suppliers and agencies, including regulatory personnel.  Coordinates projects with people at various levels who are working at other facilities.  Performs work with limited direct supervision. Leads MVP projects and kaizen events. Cost reduction projects of $100K - $500K annually.
