Position Description:

Qualifications:

POSITION SUMMARY:
1. Maintain and assist in keeping a safe and clean workplace.
2. Project Support: Principal investigator of RD projects in the areas of machining, grinding, finishing and tribology tests for various materials. The candidate should work with different RD groups and businesses to identify research opportunities and participate in projects in the areas of machining, grinding, polishing, CMP, and surface characterization and related topics. Some of the possible projects include: application testing and characterization of abrasive grains used in grinding wheels, wiresawing, lapping, polishing, and CMP slurry evaluation; precision finishing of advanced ceramics, crystals; developing instrumentation for machining/finishing processes; advancing surface characterization methods. The candidate needs to have the abilities to analyze the problem, develop an experimental approach, execute experiments with assistance, collect data, interpret results and report the data to internal customers and management.
3. Process improvements: The incumbent might be involved in developing finishing processes in conjunction with a range of internal abrasive products.
4. Supervision: Supervision of technical people to accomplish project objectives. Ability to define priorities for different projects from RD groups and assist in scheduling tasks.
5. Document work through use of laboratory notebooks, technical memos, research reports and SOP’s. Data and results need to be presented in oral and written form.

COMPETENCIES:
Several years of experience in surface finishing of advanced materials. Skills associated with a M.S./Ph.D (preferably a Ph.D.) in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or related engineering discipline with experience in machining of engineering materials. Experience with metrology and surface characterization tools is necessary. Experience with material removal processes such as machining, grinding, lapping and polishing is required. Experience in precision finishing with fine-grit loose abrasive technologies, such as polishing and CMP, are a strong plus. Experience with instrumention of finishing processes to measure forces, power, acceleration, temperature, etc., high speed data acquisition and instrument control are strongly desired. Hands on experience with experimental set up, design, fabrication and equipment related to abrasive finishing processes is a must. The candidate must be well organized, have the ability to communicate with staff, RD and customers. Knowledge of personal computer systems and general-purpose software is required. The candidate must be willing and able to multi-task in a team oriented setting.
