Responsibilities: GENERAL SUMMARY / OVERVIEW STATEMENT: Working very independently, performs non-routine, highly specialized experimental procedures including deposition of data and further development of the UniPROBE database, which was previously developed by the Bulyk lab. Participates in the design and modification of research protocols. Composes and may present sections of research reports and manuscripts. Performs advanced data analysis using advanced statistical techniques. Coordinates lab activities and undertakes quality assurance programs. Supervises lab staff. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Independently performs non-routine, highly specialized experimental procedures such as deposition of transcription factor clone, protein, and DNA binding specificity data from protein binding microarrays into existing UniPROBE database developed and hosted by the Bulyk lab. 2. Minor improvements to organization and maintenance of UniPROBE database and associated web-based search tools. 3. Development of a ?BLASTP? new web-hosted tool for searching UniPROBE for closest matches to a user-input query protein. 4. Participates in the design and modification of research protocols. 5. Develops research methodologies within the parameters of experimental protocols and research objectives. 6. Composes and may present sections of research reports and manuscripts. 7. Performs advanced data analysis using advanced statistical techniques. 8. Responsible for the oversight and coordination of all lab activities, including quality assurance. 9. Responsible for the oversight and coordination of the scheduling of all procedures. 10. Responsible for troubleshooting problems and instructing others in highly specialized techniques. 11. If entry level research staff is present, responsible for supervising staff in the lab, including hiring, firing, evaluation and discipline. 12. In collaboration with Research Manager and/or Principal Investigator (PI), participates in budget and grant development and preparation. 13. All other duties, as assigned. Requirements: QUALIFICATIONS: ? B.S, M.S. in engineering, computer science, or related field, plus a minimum of 3 years on-the-job experience in a biological or biomedical research environment ? Must have solid background knowledge of proteins, DNA, transcription factors, DNA binding domains, and DNA binding site motifs (position weight matrices) ? Must have solid background in universal protein binding microarray data SKILLS / ABILITIES / COMPETENCIES REQURIED: ? High degree of computer literacy, including Linux, PHP, Javascript, SQL, MySQL, Apache, Windows, C/C++, Java, Pearl, Unix ? Sound analytical and organizational skills ? Requires good oral and written communication skills ? Must be able to logically and effectively structure tasks and set priorities ? Ability to identify potential problems and troubleshoot solutions ? Demonstrated ability to analyze data statistically and to logically present it ? Must have a broad knowledge of scientific principles, biological structures, and laboratory techniques ? Must have sound interpersonal skills and the ability to supervise others SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsible for supervising staff including hiring, firing, evaluating and disciplining.
