The Infrastructure Engineering team responsible for building the next-generation infrastructure for NYTimes.com is looking for a hands-on Unix Systems Engineer. Day-to-day activities include providing design and infrastructure support to the NYTimes.com production and development environments, defining standards for virtualized, non-virtualized systems, and cloud systems, and collaborating with the rest of the Infrastructure Engineering department to achieve greater availability, reliability and maintainability ofNYTimes.com's underlying infrastructure.

Successful candidates will typically possess :

Three or more years in a Senior Unix administrator role

Strong interpersonal and communication skills; Ability to explain complex topics to a diverse user base, clearly present best practices to management, train unix operators/jr. unix administrators, and define processes and procedures.

Subject Matter Expertise ;  Strong Linux background with significant exposure to three or more of the following disciplines:

Virtualization (VMware/EC2/Xen)

Storage (EMC)

Amazon Cloud technologies (VPC/RDS/S3/ELB)

Web technologies (Apache/NGINX/Jetty/Tomcat/Load balancing)

High Availability / Disaster Recovery

Networking (Cisco/Juniper)

Performance

Security

Backup (Networker/Recoverpoint)

Familiarity with the following ;  DNS (BIND), LDAP, Metrics/Monitoring, MySQL/Oracle, NFS, SMTP/Postfix, FC/ISCSI SAN, SSH, SSL, GIT/SVN, TCP/IP

Familiarity with software development tools, methods, and processes

Extensive experience providing and automating day to day systems administration duties;  Shell(Bourne) and Perl scripting abilities

Troubleshooting skills ; Ability to identify, isolate, and correct systems, networking, and virtualization related issues

Agility ; Ability to rapidly adapt to a fast paced, technology driven environment
