Structural Designer
Location: St Johns, NL A1C6C9
Structural Designer
Responsibilities:
- Prepares detailed drawings/models for a complete phase of a project from rough sketches and related technical data requiring the application of theoretical and practical design knowledge.
- Checks work assigned to lower-level CAD Technicians for technical quality, accuracy and compliance with customer, Company and discipline standards.
- Performs discipline design tasks which regularly require the application of fundamental engineering concepts.
- Reviews manufacturers' or fabricators' drawing submittals for conformance with contract specifications.
- Establishes design requirements for an assigned phase of a project, determines manpower requirements and monitors schedule/progress.
- Provides input to performance appraisals for lower-level personnel assigned to project.
- Supports field assignments as required.
Requirements:
- Typically six years progressively responsible discipline related design experience; degree or completion of technical courses with 3-5 years of relevant experience.
- Intermediate level design position responsible for performing moderate to complex work assignments involving independent judgment to determine a course of action consistent with established functional and organization's policies and goals.
- Familiar with basic engineering and/or design/drafting concepts. Has general understanding of other disciplines' roles in the design process.
- Able to complete tasks in accordance with project procedures and applicable codes and/or standards.
- Able to discuss routine technical problems and communicate effectively with immediate supervisor and other project personnel.
- Able to utilize advanced PC and 2D CAD tools, and other applicable hardware and software to perform duties with minimal assistance.
- Continue to apply and strengthen applicable design skills, as well as software skills, such as 3D CAD.
- Ability to meet deadlines and manage priorities important.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills are critical. Usually able to explain why things are done they way they are within a broader organizational context.
- Commitment to customer service and ability to work in a team-oriented environment.
- Ability to maintain confidential information critical. Under minimal supervision, performs difficult drafting/design and/or technical support assignments, requiring the application of advanced drafting and fundamental design techniques, and engineering and mathematical principles, in accordance with established standards and procedures.
- May direct the work of lower-level CAD Technicians.
- Typically will regularly interface with departmental staff and lower, middle and upper management, and frequently with outside customers.

Reporting and Location:
- The position reports directly to the Structural Design Coordinator and the Lead Structural Engineer.
- Opportunity exists in St. John’s, Newfoundland.
