Supervisor - Histology

Under indirect supervision, performs a variety of duties pertaining to preparation of tissue specimens by treating with chemicals, slicing, mounting on glass slides and staining for microscopic examination and analysis by Pathologist; plans, schedules and coordinates work of subordinates. Is responsible for training new employees. Assesses and manages development and deployment of histology resources to achieve laboratory and regional strategic goals. Plans short and long term operating and capital requirements. Facilitates, coordinates, liaisons with, and communicates histology business needs to Hawaii region partners. Participates on national vendor, pathology and histology committees. Coordinates, guides, and interprets departmental structure, function, accountability, responsibility, lines of authority and requirements/qualifications. Serves as educator to the histology team. Supervises assigned staff. Essential Functions: - Receives assignments in the form of objectives with goals and establishes goals to meet objectives; implements changes - Provides direction to employees according to established policies and management guidance - Assists in developing, modifying and executing company policies, which affect immediate operations - Maintains and monitors facility; emphasizes safety, customer service, efficient workflow, and regulatory compliance; develops techniques to ensure effective, economical and efficient use of equipment, supplies, and facility - Coordinates, guides, and interprets departmental structure, function, accountability, responsibility, lines of authority and requirements/qualifications - Works on issues where analysis of situation or data requires review of relevant factors - Utilizes strategies and policies when selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results - Exercises judgment within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate action - Sets team objectives and contribute to individual department's tactical execution of strategy - Encourages employee development by providing growth/learning opportunities. - Promotes team's commitment to changes required - Plans and establishes a course of action for team or unit, establishes priorities to accomplish goals allocate resources and track results - Initiates required improvements to business process in order to achieve business results and appropriate solutions for customers - Manages financial aspects of the team or unit, accountable for direct budget - Directs work teams to develop and implement application systems. Addresses client requirements, dynamic technologies, priorities and targeted schedule dates and timelines - Receives, properly records, and accessions specimens of tissues from surgical or diagnostic cases and from autopsies - Impregnates sections with paraffin; dehydrates, clears, and impregnates tissue using automated tissue processor as necessary; imbeds tissues in paraffin for sectioning - Cuts and stains thin sections of specimens, using various types of routine or special microtome knives and stains; mounts and labels stained specimens on microscope slides - Performs variety of duties including tissue fixation techniques, processing, embedding, sectioning, routine and special staining, immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence - Examines sample of stained slides with microscope to ascertain that results are satisfactory and determines when prescribed techniques and apparatus should be modified to meet special conditions and to expedite diagnosis - Additional essential functions as listed in the complete job description Requirements
