DUTIES: This position is the operational supervisor of the Colorado River District of Rocky Mountain National Park. Provides direct supervision to a summer seasonal staff of up to eight commissioned rangers. The Colorado River District area of responsibility includes high use frontcountry areas, large sections of the park's wilderness, and relationships with a wide range of park stakeholders. The Colorado River District ranger functions as a team member to the overall management of the Colorado River District, and the park staff in general. In addition, performs Supervisory Leadership duties in the absence of the Colorado River District Ranger. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: This is a physically arduous position. Duties involve field work requiring strenuous physical performance, endurance, and superior condition. Work requires prolonged standing, walking over uneven ground, and recurring bending, reaching, lifting and carrying items weighing over 50 pounds. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment involves regular and recurring exposure to moderate risks or discomforts such as low temperatures, high winds, adverse weather conditions, falling limbs or trees and similar situations. Employees may require special safety precautions, e.g., working around moving parts or machines; with contagious diseases or irritant chemicals, etc. The employee may be required to use protective clothing or gear such as masks, gowns, coats, boots, gloves, helmets, or shields. AREA INFORMATION/HOUSING INFORMATION: Established on January 29, 1915, Rocky Mountain National Park is a living showcase of the grandeur of the Rocky Mountains. With elevations ranging from 8,000 feet in the wet, grassy valleys to 14,259 feet at the weather-ravaged top of Longs Peak, a visitor to the park has opportunities for countless breathtaking experiences and adventures. This position is located on the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park. The nearest community is Grand Lake, Colorado which includes a post office, restaurants, 2 small grocery stores, shops, etc. A school for Kindergarten through twelfth grade (K-12) is located in Granby, CO, which is 16 miles from Grand Lake. Granby also has medical services, a large grocery store, and other amenities. There are boundless outdoor activities including hiking, fishing, boating, biking, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, down hill ski resorts, and hot springs within 40 miles of Grand Lake. There is significant snowfall from November to April, and winter temperatures range from 10 to 35 F. Denver, Colorado which has a major airport, cultural events, and several professional sports teams is a two hour drive away. This is a required occupancy position. Housing will be made available for incumbent. However, incumbent may live outside of Rocky Mountain National Park within a 15 minute response time.
