SURG. PATHOLOGY SPECIALIST II
Job Description The SPS II reports to the Supervisor of the surgical pathology laboratory, works independently under minimal supervision. Performs clerical and technical functions required for the efficient functioning of the area. All duties required of SPS I. Grossing of selected intermediate specimens under minimum supervision. Training S.P.S. I and new residents in grossing small surgical specimens. Troubleshoot and rectify problems pertaining to small sided surgical specimens with minimal supervision. Demonstrates leadership skills in training, commitment to customer service with good judgment and excellent communication skills. Supervises SPS grossing techs area in the absence of the supervisor or the senior PA. Intimate knowledge of Histology tissue processors. Ability to work independently. Broad knowledge of departmental operations. Helps prepare weekly and monthly maintenance reports. Demonstrates high level skills in all major areas: grossing small and intermediate surgical specimens; accessioning all surgical specimens and competency in using PATCOM program. Assists with special projects, as applicable and prepares Q.A. reports. Periodically reviews departmental policies and procedures and assists in writing new ones. Autopsy Service duties consist of : Administrative duties pertaining to paperwork, permissions and patient chart. Standard precautions, chemical hygiene, and laboratory safety Must be able to read and write English Effective interpersonal and communication skills Attention to detail Precision in performing clerical tasks Manual dexterity Associate or Baccalaureate degree in science preferred. 24 credits of science required (Chemistry and Biology based). Courses in Medical Terminology and Human Anatomy required. Successfully passing the written and practical portions of MGH SPS I to SPS II examination.
